In October 2022, in an exclusive chat with CLAUDIA (and Miscelana), the director of the cult film Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, Stephan Elliot, announced that a sequel was in his plans. In April 2024 he confirms: that we will return to the Australian desert with the original cast: Hugo Weaving, Guy Pearce, and Terrence Stamp.
Elliot was always resistant to revisiting the story. Still, the success of the musical in theaters in several countries and the distance in time helped to rethink the sequel, which, he anticipates, will have to update itself with current issues. “I’m not repeating myself, we’re starting the new movie in Australia, but, by God, we’re having one hell of a journey,” he told Deadline. “The original cast is on board, I have a script everyone likes, and we are still closing deals. … It’s happening,” he added.

Although he did not give details of the production, after all, there are still some bureaucratic issues in progress, he remembered that Tick/Mitzi (Hugo Weaving) would have a son who would be around 37 years old today, that is, there would be another line to enter the plot. “He has grown up now,” the director revealed about the character who will be joined by new faces, “to support a new generation.”
And if the original film started a nostalgic wave of ABBA, the next one will have “old disco classics”, he anticipates, “but we will also move into contemporary”.
The plans are to start rolling in 2024! Great news!
