Desejos S.A. series has been garnering praise and led the most viewed series on the Star Plus platform, with Brazilian content that focuses on a tightly tied plot, stories that hold surprises and unexpected characters. I had a chat for CLAUDIA about this with Carol Castro the week of the release, and today I share the conversation with actress Gilda Nomacce, also in the cast.
In Desejos S.A., the motto of “What you want, when you want” comes with a catch: to achieve what you want, in addition to a symbolic fee, you need to help the other person, in a chain that can have very serious consequences if you don’t comply. the price. Gilda’s episode is very tense, she is Lucimar, a domestic worker who finds in the service an alternative to not only changing her job, but eliminating her boss, an arrogant, authoritarian, and dependent retired military officer.
CLAUDIA: What was your first reaction when reading the script?
Gilda: I was very impacted and moved. Receiving a role that is extremely important in Brazilian society, and that also resonates in different cultures, made me excited and happy. I knew it would be a great challenge to represent the role authentically, but I also knew that I was very well supported by an incredible team and that it would be directed by Mariana Youssef, who is impeccable in her vision and direction. I felt a mixture of pride for being involved in such a significant project, a lot of responsibility for respectfully portraying the character and excitement for contributing to positive and inclusive representation in the media. This opportunity also generated in me a sense of purpose and connection to relevant issues, confirming my commitment to art as a vehicle to promote change and broaden perspectives.
CLAUDIA: Betting on “horror” and suspense was not common for Brazilian series/films, but there is a large international market: in your opinion, what are the main barriers and how does the series S.A. overcome them?
Gilda: It’s really encouraging to see the investment in the horror genre by streaming platforms, especially considering the success of Brazilian cinema in this sense. The contribution of directors such as Juliana Rojas, Marco Dutra, João Paulo Miranda Maria, Gabriela Amaral Almeida, and Rodrigo Aragão, among many talented Brazilians, has been fundamental in consolidating the presence of Brazilian horror on the international scene. Furthermore, another reference is José Mojica Marins, known as Zé do Caixão (Coffin Joe), who recently turned 88 years old and is known worldwide. I started in cinema in a horror film called “Work Cansa”, which premiered at Cannes, where I had the privilege of walking the Red Carpet. I like doing horror. Desejos S.A. mixes some genres, comedy and suspense are also present, beyond terror.

CLAUDIA: The “terror” trend, using a principle already explored in so many films and series before (Sinister Pact, among them), plays with a common desire for a solution to pain. How does the series deal with the theme?
Gilda: The plot makes connections with the exposure of power and desire. To what extent do we submit ourselves to the fulfillment of that desire being the most obscure, selfish, or liberating? How does ethics compare to your desire? We can ask ourselves many questions, but the series talks about the impulse to satisfy our desires. In turbulent tides, of synapses, what is desire? Is it organic? Is it sociocultural? Is the desire planted? Borrowed? Authentic? And in the opportunity for solutions to pain, it can lead to dangerous and unpredictable paths. By delving into the characters’ motivations and the complexity of their desires, “Desejos Inc.” has the opportunity to offer a deep reflection on the choices we make in times of suffering.
CLAUDIA: The “derisory” price proves that what’s cheap can be expensive: how do everyone’s arcs intersect?
Gilda: What’s cheap ends up being paid for with what doesn’t have an estimated price in currency. Each of the six protagonists has their own narrative arc, but, throughout the series, the paths of these characters end up crossing in unexpected and sometimes frightening ways, desire has consequences that there is no way back.
CLAUDIA: What is your wish that could be fulfilled?
Gilda: I dream of a long-lasting career. With infinite characters, that lead me to communicate with my time, issues, and feelings, that can exist in the place of art. Where there are no polarizations. Because each person unfolds from that experience what they communicate with their innermost being. I dream of communicating freely. Without judgment and with respect for what the other receives from what I explored from my perspectives and, thus, infinitely with the characters living with the joy of discovering so many universes during my lifetime.
