I like Fernando Meirelles‘ work and I’m a fan of Colin Farrell, and what’s more, I’m a fan of the noir genre so Sugar seemed tailor-made for me, not even the algorithm could get it so precisely. However, it didn’t completely win me over.
It’s not the director’s or the actor’s fault because Sugar is well-produced, and has good performances. The problem is in the noir genre, with its off-screens, its tortured detective, the missing woman, the conspiracy that he still hasn’t tied up: it drags on a story that we’ve already seen and will have few surprises.
Clichés and homages to cinema
Following the classics, film noir fan Detective John Sugar (Colin Farrell) is hired by film producer Jonathan Siegel (James Cromwell) to find his granddaughter, Olivia (Sydney Chandler). Everyone insists that she momentarily disappeared because of drugs, but even without having ever seen her, Sugar’s instinct tells her that the story is different. In this, in the series created by screenwriter Mark Protosevich, the detective navigates between rich people’s parties and the underworld of the cinema capital.
If the story seems too simple, the “turn” dividing the public is somewhat “original” and requires following until the end to know if it will be bizarre or brilliant. We will have to follow…
