The term “dark matter” is used in astronomy as a hypothetical form of matter that does not appear to interact with light or the electromagnetic field, making it difficult to define by general relativity unless more matter is present. then can be seen. In the fiction created by writer Blake Crouch, it refers to the quantum mechanics of the multiverse, in which each decision we make opens a door to a different life, which runs parallel to ours.
The 2016 book was adapted into an Apple TV Plus series, with the great Joel Edgerton playing the physicist who is kidnapped by himself and who needs to decipher how to survive and return to his timeline. Sound complex? But after so many multiverses, we’re used to it.

In the first two episodes, tightly tied together, we follow Jason Dessen (Edgerton), a physicist in Chicago who is kidnapped by an alternative version of himself who leads him to fight to return to his life as he knew it while doing everything he can to prevent the alternative version of yourself harms your family. It makes sense when we watch it.
Joel Edgerton is a great actor, who I’ve seen in the theater doing A Streetcar Named Desire with Cate Blanchett and he perfectly handled a role immortalized by Marlon Brando, and he can play two versions of the same person without subterfuge of clothes or glasses, we know exactly who It’s who for his posture and look, but with subtlety and talent. By her side, we have the beautiful Jenniffer Connelly and Alice Braga, who haven’t exactly been challenged yet.

There is a tension of conspiracy and drama in the air, anguish that is used in films and series ad infinitum, and that obviously works perfectly. The wrong and common man who has to decipher what is happening to save himself and his family too.
In the book, Jason is a man frustrated in his career, but in a happy marriage. Without understanding what is happening, he is kidnapped and sent to a parallel universe where another version of his life, which, thanks to his decision 15 years earlier, unfolds very differently from the current one. He “travels through timelines” thanks to a giant cube he built that allows occupants to move between the countless worlds created from all the possible outcomes of each event.
The reality that Jason considers “true”, and that he wants to rescue, is that he is married to Daniela (Connelly) and has a teenage son. “Jason 2”, cruel and violent, lived with another woman, Amanda (Braga), who I will say, knows exactly what is happening!
In this multiverse aspect, Jason 1 is running from the scientists who want to arrest him, from the hospital that wants to admit him, and still trusts everyone excessively, because he is an upstanding and nice guy. Meanwhile, Jason 2 is enjoying the home life he refused 15 years earlier and after what he did to be there, we know that Charlie and Daniela are in serious danger.
From what we saw in the trailer, we know that Amanda will enter the cube with him and help him, but, as they are not familiar with how to effectively use the cube, they will be transported to several parallel worlds until they finally get to where Jason 1 wants to go. Facing Jason himself, and the others he encountered along the way, will be one of the challenges of the series.
So in the first two episodes, we establish that Jason 1 is a nice guy, with integrity, even if frustrated. Intelligent, he can quickly understand “how” things have changed but still doesn’t suspect that he is dealing with a terrible part of himself. Everyone is different, and that’s what’s cool, because it’s how reality could have been and shaped relationships, so it’s confusing for Jason 1 because the people who can help him are also different.
Like good thrillers, some hints still have their logic unrevealed:
- As I mentioned, technically Amanda doesn’t know that Jason 2 switched places with Jason 1, even though she realizes there’s something different about him. I’ll seal it here: Amanda knew about the exchange plan and helped Jason 2.
- The numerous unanswered phone calls clearly show that there are more people involved.
- Ryan (Jimmi Simpson, who we know from Westworld), like Amanda, is involved. He is the one who creates the opportunity for the exchange between the “Jasons”, but as in the multiverse in Jason 2 he receives the phone calls and does not help Jason 1, I bet he is directly responsible for the plot.
At the heart, literally, of the multiverses is Daniela, who is the love of Jason 1’s life, who had been discarded by Jason 2 and is clearly also the object of Ryan’s desire.
SPOILER ALERT, unfortunately, “Daniela 2” has a tragic and unexpected fate. In the mix of Face Off and The Fugitive, Dark Matter revives the tired theme that kind of ruined Marvel’s current phase. Will it be wrong already? It already enchanted me!
Theory: In the Jason 2 universe, he made his life choices based on ego, success, and matter, but SOMETHING made him change his mind and run away. With the help of Ryan and Amanda, he returns to the universe that would have been if he had made another choice, where Ryan has a chance with Daniela and they would kill Jason 1. Am I close?
