Even amid the phenomenal success of Shogun in the first half of 2024, the producers insisted that the series would only have 10 scheduled episodes and no second season. Skeptics wondered why, amid so much uncertainty, the platform wouldn’t insist on a title with huge global success?
The most immediate answer would be “production cost, after all, rich in details and period reconstruction, the remake of the 1980 series and adaptation of the 1970s best-seller was not “cheap”. Either it would be the strategy of leaving the audience with a taste of “I want more” or just, as is beginning to appear, a dissimulation of a strategy worthy of Toronaga. Some signs that we will have more of the Japanese saga began to show signs of life in specialized magazines this week.

According to Variety, the series’ original platform in the USA, FX, is considering placing Shogun in the Drama Series Category of the 2024 Emmys, and no longer in the Miniseries category. The change is more than increasing the chances of the series and the cast of winning, after all, as I mentioned in the award predictions, this is the “weakest” year in the category, with “no successor to Succession” on the horizon.
If the news is confirmed, it will reveal FX’s plans to invest heavily in the recognition of the series and also that yes, there is a second season in the works because if it goes on as a “series”, it means there are more episodes/seasons to come.

The historical epic, as Variety defines it, was recreated by Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks, who managed to please generations who knew the original and delight those who are just now discovering the story of the Englishman who became a samurai.
If in fact, Shogun changes category, it will compete with The Crown, and The Morning Show and leave Ripley‘s line or even more so, the 2024 fever: Baby Reindeer. FX hasn’t confirmed the move to Variety, but we’ll keep an eye on it. There is plenty of material for the next stage of the story, we just need to hope that FX invests in the investment. It will be?
