Matt Smith in the Nick Cave universe

The year 2024 has been a busy one for Matt Smith. From June onwards, he returned to play the popular and enigmatic Daemon Targaryen in House of the Dragon, but in February he rocked London with a praised performance in the play Enemy of the People, a modernized revision of Ibsen‘s 1882 classic, and today, early May, he was seen recording his next project: The Death of Bunny Munro, an adaptation of the book of the same name written by rock poet Nick Cave.

The Death of Bunny Munro was the second novel by Nick Cave, who has already written four and wrote the script with none other than Peter Jackson. As is common in the Australian star’s universe, the story is dense and set in an underworld of addiction and pain and navigates the tragic relationship between a widower and his 9-year-old son.

The plot says that Bunny Munro is a traveling salesman with a self-destructive lifestyle, who, after his wife’s suicide, is tasked with taking care of his son, Bunny Junior. Despite the gravity of his situation, Bunny Senior continues his pattern of reckless behavior, indulging in sex, alcohol, and drugs while dragging his son on sales trips around the south coast of England, in a spiral of self-destruction in which there is only hope through of his son’s love and innocence.

When the project was announced in late 2023, Matt Smith said the story “is a brilliant exploration of love, pain, and chaos. At its heart, a deep, difficult, and tender story about a father and son, dealing with loss and change,” and it is a project in which we will be able to see more of his talent in a leading role.

Despite the title and the traveling salesman reference, the connection between The Death of Bunny Munro and The Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller is not intentional and there are no explicit thematic parallels, even though, indirectly, the two stories are about the tragic flaws of the protagonists and the impact of their actions on their families.

Bunny Munro is a morally flawed man whose self-destructive behavior and obsession with sex lead to his downfall. while Willy Loman is a failed salesman whose lifelong pursuit of the American dream and his delusions of grandeur led to his emotional and financial ruin, deeply affecting his family, especially his children. What they have in common is their inability to change their ways.

For those who follow Matt Smith’s path, if you’re in Brighton, this is your chance to bump into him. Matt was seen in a block of flats, leaning over the balcony of a flat in Whitehawk, and previously filmed at Belchers Café on Montpelier Road and in Bedford Square.

The series The Death of Bunny Munro will be shown on the SKY platform in the United Kingdom, but there is still no confirmation on where it will premiere in the rest of the world. The actor’s fans won’t be able to complain about missing him this year. And, for Brazilians, as a bonus is confirmation that Matt will be at CCXP-SP in December. In other words, as he is an adopted carioca, after his first week in São Paulo he looks like he will turn the year around in the city where he has lived as a resident for over 15 years. It’s the year of Matt Smith!
