Brides, Fathers, Mothers, Resorts: the romance formula

There are formulas in romantic films that become childish when used shamelessly, as with The Mother of the Bride, the Netflix film that stars Brooke Shields in the title role. The reason why the cliché is used shamelessly is simple: it works.

The plot is short because it is just an excuse for a series of well-known situations: Lana (Brooke Shields), a widowed scientist, is surprised by the news that her only daughter, Emma (Miranda Cosgrove) is getting married. Not only that, but how is an influencer (strangely sponsored by the Discovery network? It doesn’t make sense, but…) getting married in just a few weeks, at an event at a resort in Thailand.

If that wasn’t already stressful enough, upon arriving at the hotel Lana discovers the worst: her fiancé is the son of an ex-boyfriend (Benjamin Bratt), the man who broke her heart when she was still in college. As the two have not spoken since then, the reunion is “dramatic”.

From then on, we know all the situations: misunderstandings, tears, laughter, songs, falling into the water, exchanging looks until the happy ending. It goes by quickly and only skids when Brooke forces her hand in the comic sequences when she relaxes and deals with what they are presenting. Yes, escapism is a genre I always recommend. Once expectations are adjusted, it’s just a reason to relax and smile.
