On June 13th, those eager to know how this season of Bridgerton will turn out know that it’s binge day: the last episodes arrive on Netflix, finally. And in this third part, for me, we follow the most interesting of the characters, precisely the one who is not (yet) a Bridgerton: Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan). Our dear and shy young woman has one of the best evolutions in history and is – secretly – the feared Lady Whistledown, a secret that separated her from her best friend and that could affect her love story with Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton). Yes, we are anxious: how will they be when he knows the truth?

Penelope’s evolution
In the first season, Penelope is presented as a shy and intelligent young woman, but overshadowed by both her more extroverted sisters and her controlling mother. From the beginning, it is clear that Penelope has a secret crush on Colin Bridgerton, her best friend, but she imagines that because she doesn’t have the body type that is the benchmark for beauty, the chances of a romance between them are minimal. Friendship, for now, is enough.
Even with flowery clothes and strong tones, Penelope always goes unnoticed but this is what helps her to hide the fact that she is actually the mysterious “Lady Whistledown”, the gossip columnist who has London high society in her hands with her accurate observations and access to so many secrets.

In season two, Penelope continues to navigate between her two identities and faces moral dilemmas about the impact of her gossip. She tries, but doesn’t always succeed, to protect those she loves, especially Colin. When Eloise Bridgerton (Claudia Jessie) discovers the truth, the two break up.
At this point, Penelope begins to gain more confidence in herself and becomes more assertive. She also begins to question the expectations that society and her family have of her. In the third part, we find her again determined to find a husband to gain the independence that she is not yet allowed as a single woman, to escape a future “bound” to her mother.
Finding Colin now safe and in-demand mankind messes up her plans even if the impossible happens: he falls in love with her. The problem is that he doesn’t suspect that sweet Penelope is precisely the detestable Lady Whistledown, something that will now be central to the season.
What now, Penelope?
In the book The Secrets of Colin Bridgerton by Julia Quinn, Colin Bridgerton will discover the truth and the revelation will be a shock for him. Initially, Colin will feel betrayed, but equally confused because he realizes that Penelope, someone he has always seen as a shy and reserved person, has such a powerful and influential secret identity and this duality between her public image and her friend’s true essence. leaves him perplexed.
However, as Colin processes the revelation, he begins to admire Penelope’s intelligence, courage, and ability to manipulate information and keep her secret for so long. He realizes that he underestimated Penelope and begins to see her in a new light, recognizing the depth and complexity of her personality.

From then on, he will feel a mix of pride and concern about the possible repercussions that the discovery of Lady Whistledown’s true identity could bring to Penelope, but he also feels proud to be associated with someone so talented and resourceful.
And guys, we’re talking about Bridgerton, of course, it’s going to work! Colin decides to support Penelope because as Lady Whistledown she has found her own voice and is an influence in a world that often silences women. Ultimately, the revelation strengthens their bond. Who already anticipates the emotion? I love escapism stories! Let’s binge!
