Caroline McCall: Continuity and Innovation in House of the Dragon Costumes

I like traditions and here at MiscelAna, I prefer to follow and highlight costumes from series and films. Yes, I spoke with Michele Clapton from Game of Thrones, Jany Temime from House of the Dragon, and several other designers.

The attentive eyes of fans have noticed that there is something different in the second season of HOTD and yes, it is the costumes that now have strong quotes from Michele’s work (which I consider museum work).

The new costume designer is the super ultra award-winning Caroline McCall, who designed Downton Abbey and His Dark Materials, among others. The changes were felt even before the season premiered, with the first photos from the series. They were spectacular.

The continuity inserted by Caroline is one of the aspects positively calculated so that, conversely, Daenerys was “following” the Targaryen tradition (and not establishing it, which was effectively what happened).

“I wish that, maybe in retrospect, Daenerys was trying to maintain her heritage and lineage through some of the techniques and things that were in her costumes. So, yes, I used elements that I decided on, or the kind of Targaryen aesthetic because I wanted to feel like… the Targaryens were from ancient Valyria. And it’s like one of the ancient cultures, you know the Romans, the Egyptians. And try to build on that and there are embroidery techniques, there are certain fabrics and things that are similar to what Daenerys wore,” she said in an interview.

I will comment again on each of the costumes. Here’s just a record of what we love on the blog!
