Jace and Jon: the heroism of bastards in Westeros

I don’t even try to hide it: I’m a fan of Jon Snow (Kit Harington) and I’ve always considered him one of the best characters in Game of Thrones. For better or for worse, Jon was honest and kind, he didn’t always make the right choices, but he had a sense of morality based on general well-being and sacrificed himself more than once for it. There is no one like Jon Snow in House of the Dragon, but fans of the series have already chosen his mirror: Prince Lucaerys Velaryon (Harry Collett).

The physical appearance of the characters is one of the characteristics that most suggest to fans that there is a connection between them. Unfortunately, there isn’t. Not exactly. Jon is a descendant of Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) but did not see Jacaerys. Unfortunately, Jace will have a tragic end before having children, but through little Aegon III, the Queen’s son with Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith), the lineage continues.

The comparisons between Jacaerys Velaryon and Jon Snow are plausible and as clear as their differences.

The Similarities:

1- Noble Origin and Legacy:

Both Jacaerys and Jon Snow have noble origins and are heirs to important houses. Jacaerys is the son of Rhaenyra Targaryen, while Jon is raised as the bastard son of Eddard Stark (Sean Bean), but it later turns out that he is actually the son of Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen.

2- Responsibility and Leadership:

Both Jacaerys and Jon Snow take leading roles in their respective stories. Jacaerys is trained and prepared to be a leader and eventual heir to the Iron Throne, while Jon Snow becomes Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch and, later, an important leader in the fight against the White Walkers.

3- Courage and Honor:

Both are known for their courage and sense of honor. They are willing to make personal sacrifices for the greater good and often face complex moral dilemmas.

The Differences:

1- Family Context:

Jacaerys is raised within a family that, although complex and full of conflicts, recognizes him as the legitimate heir. Jon Snow, on the other hand, grows up like a bastard, often feeling like an outsider, even within his own family.

2- Motivations and Conflicts:

Jacaerys is deeply involved in the civil war known as the Dance of Dragons, fighting for his mother’s throne. Jon Snow, in contrast, is more focused on external threats, such as the White Walkers and the survival of humanity, although he also becomes involved in political conflicts.
Destiny and Revelations:

Jon Snow has a major revelation about his true identity throughout the series, which changes his perception of himself and his role in the world. Jacaerys, as far as we know, does not experience a revelation of this magnitude about his identity. He knows his father is Ser Harwin Strong (Ryan Corr), but he remains a Velaryon until the end.

Jace’s participation, compared to Jon’s, is much smaller throughout History, but there are more parallels between the two, until the prince visits the North, meeting one of the Stark ancestors. But no one can deny that they are men of integrity.

Do you remember anything else that I didn’t mention?
