Slow Horses returns in September 2024 (Spoilers)

We already have a confirmed date for us to have fun again with the rudeness of Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman) in Slow Horses: September 2024!

The series, which generally records two seasons in one fell swoop, so it already has the 4th and 5th rounds, enters the Apple TV Plus platform on September 4th and is, as we anticipated, the adaptation of Mick Herron‘s book, Spook Street and features Hugo Weaving in the cast.

Slow Horses is a spy dramedy that follows the dysfunctional team of British intelligence agents who serve in an MI5 dump department known affectionately as Slough House, due to its address, generating the joke where they define those who work there as “slow horses”.

As expected Gary Oldman has put on a show as the brilliant but misanthropic leader of Slough House, the insufferable Jackson Lamb. Only agents at the end of their careers are assigned to Lamb’s team, but as we know, they are much smarter than they initially appear. To make matters worse, their internal enemy, the snobbish and unreliable Diana Taverner (Kristin Scott Thomas) is always ready to harm them.

Jack Lowden, Saskia Reeves, Rosalind Eleazar, Christopher Chung, Aimee-Ffion Edwards, Kadiff Kirwan, and Jonathan Pryce also return, with the news of new names in addition to Hugo Weaving: Joanna Scanlan, Ruth Bradley, Tom Brooke, and James Callis, the latter in a prominent position, especially in the fifth and already confirmed season.

SPOILERS: The Spook Street Plot

Picking up immediately where we left off in season three, the Slow Horses team will now deal with a series of – literally – explosive events that rock the British intelligence community. The season begins with a suicide bombing in a busy London shopping mall, which sets off a chain of events that leads to a deeper, more complex conspiracy.

As we have seen, River Cartwright (Lowden) is dealing with the advanced dementia of his grandfather, former high-ranking MI5 officer David Cartwright (Pryce), which makes him a danger as he is an easy target for terrorists after him. of confidential information. David cannot control his mind to keep or reveal state secrets. Therefore, he may be unwittingly linked to the new terrorist attacks that River is trying to uncover.

With this, the agent tries to simultaneously protect his grandfather and discover the truth, in a dangerous game that puts him (again!) in front of a web that involves old secrets from the Cold War, modern terrorism, and internal betrayals within the intelligence community.

Obviously, River’s ally and threat is her boss, Jackson Lamb (Oldman), a cynical and difficult-to-read man, often hiding his true intentions and feelings behind a facade of sarcasm and disdain. One of Lamb’s greatest abilities is to read people perfectly, easily anticipating their plans and actions, including, of course, River.

One of the secrets that torment Jackson Lamb is his past as a field agent during the Cold War, working directly with David Cartwright. Behind the aggressive and slovenly facade, there is a significant weight of guilt and regret for the operations he conducted and the decisions he made, some of which led to the deaths of colleagues.

This connection with River’s grandfather is essential in Spook Street because it has direct implications for the events of the fourth season. This relationship helps explore themes of loyalty, legacy, and the consequences of past actions in the present.

David, known as “The Old Man” among his colleagues, is a veteran of British espionage and his senility raises suspicions about his ability to keep important secrets and even more so, his mental condition makes it difficult to distinguish between what is real and what is real. which is a figment of your imagination. Amid his mental confusion, David reveals that there is a conspiracy within the British intelligence service, involving high-ranking members, mentioning that there is a “mole” or double agent undercover who poses a significant threat. This revelation is crucial to the development of the plot, as it leads River to investigate further and discover the extent of corruption and betrayal within the agency and also the chance to clear her family’s name and protect national security.

One of the people from David’s past is Frank Harkness (Hugo Weaving), a former CIA agent who has engaged in shady activities and is known for his ruthless tactics and his willingness to do whatever is necessary to achieve his goals, which makes him a dangerous and unpredictable figure. And if you’ve already figured out the obvious, here we go with spoilers.

The connection between Harkness and the Cartwrights is revealing. Remember that River was raised by his grandfather, after his mother, Isobel, “disappeared” and so he doesn’t even know who his father is. What we know is that she currently lives in Istanbul with her current boyfriend. Well, while we don’t know more about Isobel, we will see River confront the reality that he is the son of a former agent and current terrorist. That’s right, Frank is River’s father and the APPARENT antagonist of the season.

We will have more traumatic losses in the team, a lot of drama, and the doubt of David’s involvement in the plot. Ultimately, the real traitor is Jed Moody, a member of the intelligence community who sells secrets and puts agents’ lives at risk.

And on Diana’s (Scott-Thomas) side? I know she won the previous game, but we will have a new boss at MI5, Claude Whelan (James Callis), that is, once again she is in a supporting role. We know Diana, Claude’s life will not be easy!

The big villain will be a scoundrel, psychologist JK Coe (Brooke), known for his reclusive and somewhat disturbing behavior, with precise psychological vision and analytical skills. But he’s not good… keep an eye out.

There are less than two months left until we miss the pangarés. I’m anxious!
