Aemond Targaryen: Tragedy and Intensity During the Civil War

So, we already know that we haven’t even decided between Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) and Aegon II (Tom Glynn-Carey) on the Iron Throne and we will already have a third Targaryen effectively fighting for command: Aemond (Ewan Mitchell), whose loyalty to the green is undeniable, but love for one’s brother is somewhat questionable.

In the first season, we saw that Aegon played jokes with his reserved, observant, and frustrated brother for not having a dragon. To make matters worse, when he overpowers Vhagar, Aemond loses an eye, which further motivates him to excel in his combat training.

Aemond made it clear that he would be ready and wanting the Crown: he would marry Helaena (Phia Saban), something Aegon resented, learn to be fluent in Valyrian, study war strategies, and understands his kingdom. On paper, at least, the best Hand of the King available, since even on the Greens’ side he would be third in succession (in the series, second since they did not include the third son of Aegon and Helaena). Aemond king? We can tremble at the foundations.

And it will happen, indirectly, of course. After having provoked civil war by accidentally killing his nephew Lucaerys at the end of season 1, Aemond embraces his evil persona, the armor that conceals his personal insecurities. But to make matters worse, the equally insecure Aegon fears him and it seems his fear is not unfounded.

Not wanting Aemond to get the glory of his own plan of attack in Rooks Nest, Aegon enters the battle without warning and ends up “a victim of the crossfire” when his brother attacks Rhaenys (Eve Best). In fact, although House of the Dragon is more busy taking down book legends, this attack left more questions in the air than answers.

Aegon was clearly on the straight and narrow when Aemond gave the command of dracarys to Vhagar, burning and striking the king as collateral. SPOILER: Aegon does not die, but he does not return to “normal”, being destroyed inside and out. And what happens when he needs to be taken away to take care of himself? Aemond, now first in succession, assumes the regency of Westeros. And what can we expect? Blood and Fire, of course.

Aemond Targaryen played a significant role during the civil war, although he was not technically an official regent, but in fact when Aegon was removed.

Known for his fierce and determined nature, he sees in the destruction of the Blacks an alternative of mixed revenge and power. And having Vhagar under his command, one of the oldest and most powerful dragons still alive, gives him great military power and influence.

The victory of the Battle of Landing of the Gralha, a battle calculated and prepared by him and Ser Criston Cole (Fabien Frankel) will give him the freedom he has not yet had: Alicent (Olivia Cooke) has less strength in the Small Council, Ser Otto Hightower ( Rhys Iphans) – his grandfather – is away and all men respect Aemond for his coolness and willingness to fight.

Aemond’s obsession with fighting his uncle Daemon (Matt Smith) will create a historic rivalry, and, for now, they both want Harrenhal but Daemon has the advantage of taking the castle first. Harrenhal is a central fortress that allows control of several important routes and Aemond will be committed to retaking it for the Greens.

Aemond will manage to occupy Harrenhal during a critical period of the war, not because he will “beat” his uncle, but because he will make a crucial strategic error. A mistake that will change your life unexpectedly.

Daemon will take advantage of his nephew’s fixation to lure him to Harrenhal, but without Vhagar protecting King’s Landing and Aegon incapacitated, this trap will literally leave the Iron Throne free for Rhaenyra to take, which is part of Daemon’s game.

Yes, like his uncle, Aemond will find an abandoned and cursed fortress, but he will also find Ally Rivers (Gayle Rankin), the witch who will effectively be his love of life.

Aemond’s “error” in his short regency also accelerates the tragic conclusion of the conflict. As we know, he will achieve the dream combat with Daemon, in the Battle over the God’s Eye and both men and their dragons, Vhagar and Caraxes, will fall into the lake during the deadly fight. In other words, Aemond’s reign will be intense and full of surprises!
