Emmy Awards 2024: Shogun, Baby Rena, The Bear and Netflix’s Dominion

If in 2023, due to strikes by writers and actors, there was a hiatus in recordings and awards, 2024 is making up for it. We haven’t returned to our previous rhythm yet, but we’ve already realized what the platforms held back to have new content on the air over these first few months.

The award that actually suffered from the shutdowns was the Emmy Awards, the “Television Oscar”, which skipped a year and which in 2024 will have no less than TWO ceremonies. Six months after the party, on Wednesday, the 17th, we will know the year’s nominees.

I’ve already shared my guesses and it’s time to review them. It will be a year of Shogun, Baby Reindeer, and yes, The Bear. The nominees for several main categories will be announced at 12:30 pm, on the Emmy website or on YouTube, remembering that the selection criteria are content that premiered between June 2023 and May 2024. So don’t even think about House of the Dragon yet, It’s only next year that you’re counting on.

A positive feature of 2023 is that we will have many new faces among the competitors although, due to less content, less competition too. Favorites have never been easier! Next year will be very different.

The fact that Shogun has now gone from Best Miniseries to Drama Series maintains and confirms its favoritism, one more season (Miniseries are just the content of single seasons), and despite being 80% spoken in Japanese, it managed to break the barrier, being one of the favorites of the night. But other English-language hits, like Fallout and Mr. and Mrs. Smith, are among the possible nominees as well. Experts are betting that Shogun will overshadow The Gilded Age, The Crown, and The Morning Show (this one with its best season so far), in other words, Drama will almost be synonymous with Period Drama.

The Bear, which is still a “Comedy” even though it makes us cry more than laugh, will break records precisely by dominating the category where it shouldn’t be and surpassing the success of 30 Rock, which had 22 two nominations in 2009.

The big “fight” of the night will be between two Netflix contents, two major releases from the 1st semester: Baby Reindeer and Ripley, a limited series that enchanted audiences and critics. I suspect the reality drama, as well as its impressive numbers around the world, give Baby Reindeer the edge, because yes, there are great performances too. But Ripley has an undeniable artistic quality, with Dakota Fanning and especially Andrew Scott flying as the brooding psychopath. It will be difficult to say that one is better than the other.

In terms of the market, a curiosity that proves the dominance of streaming networks. According to Variety’s forecast, Netflix leads with 123 general nominations, FX (which we see here on Star Plus and will see as Disney Plus) comes with 76, and the big MAX (ex-HBO) is right next to FX with 73 nominations and only then come Prime Video with 38 and Apple TV+ with 34. Even if the numbers change, nothing takes Netflix away from the top. In other words, the platforms look like this:

1st – Netflix

2nd – Disney Plus (because it brings together Disney, FX and Hulu)

3rd – MAX

4th- Prime Video

5th- Apple TV Plus

The magazine says that the five most nominated should be: Shōgun, with 24; The Bear, with 23; Fallout with 18; the last season of The Crown, with 16 and the 2024 phenomenon, Baby Reindeer, with 13. Looking back at the market: Netflix against FX, with a single success from Amazon Prime to break the tie.

Well, if we know the finalists tomorrow, we will wait another two months until we know the winners. The party will be shown on September 15th.

Will I be correct in my guesses? Click here to remember.
