How can we analyze Mysaria as Rhaenyra’s advisor?

Mysaria (Sonoya Mizuno) is a controversial character in House of the Dragon. We know her as Daemon’s (Matt Smith) lover and at the end of the first season, it is revealed that she was a double agent the whole time, being one of the main informants for Otto Hightower (Rhys Iphans).

In the book, Mysaria is poisonous, but hates the Greens because they made her abort the child she was expecting from Daemon, in the series she is more dubious: she has never gotten pregnant or wanted to get pregnant, much less marry the rebellious prince. In the original story, she is brought to Dragonstone by him and gradually increases her influence over Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy), who is aware that the “white worm” and Daemon have resumed their affair between them. In the series, it’s different, of course.

We saw that Daemon does not forgive Mysaria, but uses her to obtain information from him. The spy’s motivation against the Greens is revenge, but for having tried to kill her (a request from Alicent (Olivia Cooke) at the suggestion of Larys Strong (Matthew Needham), something that is not clear if Mysaria knows), not for supporting the Blacks. Here, Mysaria is “for the people” when in the book it is for herself.

Still, it was interesting that, upon learning how she acted, Daemon did not hug her back, and that, having established the connection between her and Rhaenyra (both abandoned by Daemon), now that the Queen no longer has the wise advice of Rhaenys (Eve Best), anything can happen. Including the strong Internet rumors that the Targaryen who returns to Mysaria’s bed is Rhaenyra, not Daemon. Really?

Therefore, it is worth analyzing Mysaria as Rhaenyra’s advisor, comparing House of the Dragon with Fire & Blood.

Loyalty and Motivation

Mysaria is a character of ambiguous loyalty. Her main motivation can be analyzed from the perspective of her past and her experiences, after all, she does not come from a position of power or nobility, which differentiates her from many characters in the series. Her loyalty to Rhaenyra can be seen as a way of seeking security and stability in a dangerous world, much more than believing in her Cause.

Skills and Advice

Known for her intelligence and ability to manipulate information, as an advisor she offers Rhaenyra a unique and practical perspective, unlike advisors who may be bound by traditions or codes of honor. Mysaria tends to be pragmatic and direct, offering advice that may be unpopular but effective.

Political Impact

Mysaria’s presence at Rhaenyra’s side also has political implications. Her origins and her role as an advisor can be seen as a threat by traditional nobles, who may question the influence of a person of humble origins on the future queen’s decisions. This could create additional tensions in court and among Rhaenyra’s supporters.

Example of Advice

On several occasions, Mysaria demonstrates her ability to understand and manipulate the politics of Westeros. For example, she can advise Rhaenyra to make strategic alliances or use classified information to destabilize her enemies. Her direct approach can be seen in the way she deals with crisis situations, offering quick and often brutal solutions.

Counterpoint Character

Mysaria also serves as a foil to Rhaenyra’s other advisors, such as Criston Cole or other knights and lords. While these characters may offer advice based on honor, tradition, or bravery, Mysaria brings a more calculating and realistic perspective, which can be crucial in times of conflict.

There is a lot of room to grow Mysaria’s role in the Civil War conflict between the Targaryens, especially since the exact details of her fate and how she dies are not completely clear in the texts available so far.

If the series eliminates Nettles, as appears to be the case, there will be a major adaptation in the story as she is the spy who fuels Rhaenyra’s jealousy and hatred for Daemon’s favorite girl, contributing to the couple’s definitive separation. Considering that the leaks about her sexual involvement with Rhaenyra may be true, she would be her main source of influence over the Queen, surpassing that of Daemon or anyone else until the end of the saga.

It’s one to anticipate and follow, one of the rare mysteries that only the series can solve!
