Dune: Prophecy – Unveiling the Origins of Bene Gesserit Sisterhood

November.

That’s right, in four months MAX will launch the Dune: Prophecy series, which promises to be one of the most talked about of the year. The teaser with more images and information confirms expectations.

There will be six episodes to tell how the two Harkonnen sisters created the Bene Gesserit Sisterhood while fighting forces that threaten the future of humanity. “Sacrifices must be made,” we hear Valya Harkonnen (Emily Watson) say. “Sisterhood above all”, she also warns.

The series is set 10,000 years before the rise of Paul Atreides, and is about the universe created by Brian Herbert in the book Sisterhood of Dune and will have important connections to current events in the Dune films, such as the revelation about how the Bene Gesserit spread the word of the Kwisatz Haderach, and also why they decided to introduce the idea of the Lisan al-Gaib on Arrakis.

The main characters will be the sisters Valya and Tula Harkonnen (Olivia Williams), ancestors of Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson), Paul Atreides (Thimotée Chamalamet), Baron Vladimir Harkonnen (Stellan Skarsgard), and a few more characters from the current timeline of the Dune franchise. By exploring the power of the Bene Gesserit, who have authority over social and political issues, we will see how this society gained the superhuman abilities they are shown to possess in the films.

Dangerously against the sisters, we will have Desmond Hart (Travis Fimmel), a charismatic soldier with an enigmatic past, who tries to gain the trust of Emperor Javicco Corrino (Mark Strong) at the expense of the Brotherhood (aka, it’s short-lived, right?).

And that’s right: Desmond, who is a member of the Butlerian anti-technology group and who is dedicated to eradicating advanced technology and artificial intelligence, meets a tragic end during a violent confrontation with pro-technology forces. His death serves to highlight the great risks and extreme measures that both sides are willing to take in this ideological battle. It also highlights the personal sacrifices made by individuals who are caught up in this wider conflict, often paying the ultimate price for their beliefs and actions. Exactly as Valya warns in the teaser. For the actor’s fans, it’s best not to get attached to Desmond…

The expectation is also that in Dune: Prophecy between a plot that Denis Villeneuve‘s films cut out, such as the Spacing Guild, the organization that has a monopoly on interstellar travel and banking services and that uses the spice harvested on the desert planet of Arrakis. While not rivaling the Kwisatz Haderach of the Bene Gesserit, ephemeral precognition grants members of the Space Guild the ability to navigate “folded space” and safely guide starships. Although it is apolitical, its power and monopoly require supporting any dynasty that is in power, but also changing alliances when that power falls.

The series will be linked to the trilogy with important elements of its conclusion. In Dune Messiah, which will likely serve as the basis for Dune 3, we will see how Paul Atreides becomes the emperor and a religious messiah in the eyes of his Fremen followers. At this point, he will have led a bloody holy war killing billions, with total control of spice production, precisely the detail that disturbs the Space Guild’s place in the universe. Therefore the organization will join Reverend Mother Mohiam of the Bene Gesserit, Princess Irulan, and others in a plot to dethrone and kill Paul Atreides.

It’s, folks, complex, but with great potential! The specific premiere date has not yet been announced, but we will have confirmation soon.
