Ryan Gosling: The Irresistible Stuntman in The Fall Guy

There are two Ryans who are Canadian and don’t take themselves seriously: Gosling and Reynolds. Of the two, Ryan Gosling is also adored by critics as a serious actor, with more than one Oscar nomination. Because he navigates so easily between drama and comedy, Ryan Gosling is the perfect guy for Universal Pictures’ project to revive the 1980s franchise, The Fall Guy, for new generations.

The story is simple because the intention is pure fun: after an accident during filming, famous stuntman Colt Seavers (Ryan Gosling) retires, but is rehired when star Tom Ryder, who Colt always replaces in dangerous scenes (Aaron Taylor Johnson) “disappears” and only he can find him. The biggest attraction, however, is being able to work again with his ex-girlfriend, Jody (Emily Blunt), who is the director of the film, but who holds a grudge against him.

As expected, The Fall Guy is full of incredible action sequences, many funny moments, and a hundred inside jokes from the industry that even those who work in the industry cannot catch of them. That’s because the director, David Leitch, is a former stuntman and knows all the details, finding in Gosling a more than perfect vehicle to entertain and make us laugh.

Almost all the scenes are about the production process of a film, in a sequence of comical situations. An extreme tribute to those who love Cinema, to those who make Cinema, and even more so to those who make the most unbelievable scenes in cinema incredible. For example, they mention Tom Cruise (how could they not?) and the star is Tom “Ryder”. Not at all subtle, do you agree?

It works because Leitch has an undeniably gigantic cast: Hannah Waddingham is another who is incredible as producer Gail Meyer. And if you think that Colt is an evolution of the Nice Guys detective, you’re not alone, but it’s really a coincidence because if there’s one thing The Fall Guy doesn’t have, it’s originality. What it has in abundance is the undeniable chemistry of the main couple, who have as much fun as we do, when we remember that the film is intentionally silly. And it’s worth every minute (with KISS blasting, of course!)

Oh! Be careful not to miss the “blink-and-you’ll-miss-it” split between the original duo from The Fall Guy. One of the film’s thousands of inside jokes.
