Timothée Chalamet puts Bob Dylan in the running for an Oscar

The Bob Dylan biopic has been talked about since 2020, and it took longer because it faced a pandemic and strikes along the way. The name was changed from Going Electric to A Complete Unknown and instead of recounting the night the musician was booed and cried, it became about his arrival in New York and shaking up the Greenwich Village folk scene.

Since they announced that actor Timothée Chalamet, considered a rising star six years ago and now a star, would play the singer, it was already a done deal: he would be nominated for an Oscar. The release of the official teaser in July 2024 confirms that YES, he is already considered a favorite for the 2025 awards.

The teaser makes all the mystery surrounding the actor as Dylan, with his voice singing the classic A Hard Rain’s Gonna Fall and only effectively showing him at the end. No boldness, very formulaic and because there’s no need for more.

Physically, Timothée doesn’t need much makeup to play a 19-year-old Dylan, he’s perfect. So perfect that he sings more than 70% of the hits himself, without dubbing the legendary singer. And in the same teaser, we also see images of Elle Fanning as his girlfriend, Sylvie Russo (inspired by Suze Rotolo), Edward Norton as Pete Seeger, and Monica Barbaro as a young Joan Baez, with whom Dylan has a tumultuous relationship.

Directed by James Mangold, the film will only be released in December, shamelessly and precisely to be considered for the Oscar. Will it really work?
