March 2024 marks the 25th anniversary of the death of one of the most revered directors in the history of cinema: Stanley Kubrick. An auteur and innovative director, he has an impressive collection of cinema classics. Here are the 5 films most praised by critics. In my opinion, Spartacus, Lolita, and Eyes Wide Shut are missing, but is that for a second list?

2001: A Space Odyssey
Perhaps if forced to choose a single reference, 2001: A Space Odyssey would be the chosen one. This 1968 film is often cited as one of the greatest science fiction films of all time and explores themes such as artificial intelligence, human evolution, and extraterrestrial existence, with stunning visuals and an iconic soundtrack.

A Clockwork Orange
The 1971 film is based on the novel by Anthony Burgess and disturbingly explores violence and free will. Malcolm McDowell‘s performance as Alex DeLarge is memorable, and the film’s visual style is unmistakable.

The Shining
In 1980, Kubrick innovated the horror genre with his adaptation of Stephen King‘s book. Exploring psychological horror, The Shining is famous for Jack Nicholson‘s intense performance and Kubrick’s masterful direction. The story of a man who goes mad while looking after an isolated hotel is a masterpiece of the genre.

Dr. Strangelove
The 1960s were marked by the panic of a third world war, but controlled by what became known as the Cold War. Here, Kubrick addresses the threat of a nuclear holocaust in a brilliant satire, with Peter Sellers delivering a multifaceted performance and playing three different characters. A classic that turned 60 in 2024.

Full Metal Jacket
The Vietnam War was one of the most violent and impactful in the United States, and in 1987 the director created a definitive film on the subject. Full Metal Jacket is a brutal and realistic look at Marine training and the Vietnam War. The first half of the film, which focuses on recruit training, is particularly famous for R. Lee Ermey‘s performance as Sergeant Hartman and a terrifying and moving Vincent D’Onofrio.
