If you follow entertainment news, you’ll know that the current controversy is the behind-the-scenes of the film It Ends With Us, a stunning soap opera that pits Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni against each other in the public opinion arena. I have my opinion (and a side), but I’m going to avoid it because I agree that any drama involving domestic violence can’t turn into petty celebrity gossip. And since the heart of the discussion is a mention of Lana Del Rey, whom I love, I will focus on the song that opened the pot of vulgarity.

According to Blake in an interview, she had to fight to keep a scene in the film in which the song Cherry plays, giving rise to the revelation that the behind-the-scenes was confusing. According to her, “they” thought that the song – typical of Lana – which sings about a toxic and abusive relationship, “was too obvious”. As a producer (and friend of the singer), Blake won the battle.
Cherry is from the 2017 album Lust for Life. Typically nostalgic, slow, and controversial, it speaks of love, loss and the weight of longing, dreaming of a past relationship, and Lana remembering what it was like. The cherry symbolizes the sweetness and bitterness of love, an accurate image of what she is singing about. “I said true love, it’s like not feeling afraid when you’re in the face of danger,” she warns. “I fall apart when I’m with you, I fall apart. My cherries and wine, rosemary and thyme, and all my peaches (are ruined). Love, is it true love?” she asks.

A beautiful song, no doubt! Too bad it’s at the center of arguments. Do you agree?
Love
I said real love, it’s like feeling no fear
When you’re standing in the face of danger
‘Cause you just want it so much
A touch
From your real love
It’s like heaven taking the place of something evil
And lettin’ it burn off from the rush
Yeah, yeah
(Fuck)
Darlin’, darlin’, darlin’
I fall to pieces when I’m with you, I fall to pieces
My cherries and wine, rosemary and thyme
And all of my peaches (are ruined)
Love, is it real love?
It’s like smiling when the firing squad’s against you
And you just stay lined up
Yeah
(Fuck)
Darlin’, darlin’, darlin’
I fall to pieces when I’m with you, I fall to pieces (bitch)
My cherries and wine, rosemary and thyme
And all of my peaches (are ruined, bitch)
My rose garden dreams, set on fire by fiends
And all my black beaches (are ruined)
My celluloid scenes are torn at the seams
And I fall to pieces (bitch)
I fall to pieces when I’m with you
‘Cause I love you so much, I fall to pieces
My cherries and wine, rosemary and thyme
And all of my peaches (are ruined, bitch)
Are ruined (bitch)
Are ruined (fuck)
