The narration by Captain Keith Fitzpatrick (Tom Nowicki) in Bad Monkey is definitely one of the most entertaining additions to the series. The confusing crime, full of twists and turns and suspicious people, is a sailor’s story told as if it were in a bar. It helps the narrative a lot!
The third episode begins with our false hope that we are beginning to understand what is happening: a murder to obtain life insurance, contractors destroying the lives of local fishermen in the Bahamas, and a detective who is good at what he does but extremely confused in his personal life. No, that is not (only) it.

Picking up exactly where we left off, Andrew Yancy (Vince Vaughn) and Rosa (Natalie Martinez), with the undeniable chemistry between them, are deciphering the puzzle of the fished arm and what is really going on. The two parallel plots are crossed here, Yancy is at Neville’s (Ronald Peet) sister’s café and the detective, temporarily acting as a health inspector, sees Driggs the monkey in the kitchen and negotiates with the fisherman not to include the hygiene failure in his report. That’s all we have for now, Neville returns home and the investigation continues without suspecting that it could tie more facts together in this fateful encounter.
Yancy and Rosa are still after Madeleine (Nina Grollman) to understand the reason why her boyfriend Phinney (Brett Cormier) was murdered. He earned a fortune by planting his severed arm on the tourist’s hook and was killed for it. Between hilarious sequences thanks to Vaugh’s talent, the duo discovers more details, such as the involvement of the alcoholic and drug addict, Dr. Israel O’Peele (Zach Braff), who is soon eliminated as well. Previously, he explained that the scheme was a “classic ghost patient scam,” where the company billed Medicare for equipment it never purchased and stole the identities of unsuspecting senior citizens to cash their checks. Israel wrote fake prescriptions to keep up the appearance of treating patients.
Another piece of information that Yancy manages to fish out because he’s good at what he does is that, when he sees the brochure for Curly Tail Lane, the shopping mall being built in the Bahamas, he realizes part of the killer’s goal. While we’re at it, let’s talk about Neville.

The fisherman is still angry that the voodoo didn’t work and decides to take action to get his revenge. The holy mother, Queen Dragon (Jodie Turner-Smith) asks for more to speed up her spell on Christopher and Neville has to sacrifice something he really likes to make up for his skepticism, handing Driggs over to Ya-ya (L. Scott Caldwell). And, in a hurry, he uses a gun to threaten the bandit “Egg” (David St. Louis). I’m not sure what Neville wants exactly, but his revenge is to see the foreigners who took his house in the worst possible way.
Back in Miami, here’s the confusion. Yancy believes that Nick Stripling’s death was planned by his second wife, Eve Stripling (Meredith Hagner), who has a boyfriend, Christopher (Rob Delaney), to get the $5 million insurance policy. That’s not quite right. Christopher is Nick, or maybe they’re twins, and he’s missing an arm, but he’s alive. What’s really going on?
And I’ll give you my guesses about the plots going on behind the scenes. We have a former partner of Yancy, police officer Mendez (Gonzalo Menendez), who is paying attention to everything and is at odds with the detective. So far, he’s been presented as corrupt and dangerous, but guys, the culprit behind some serious corruption scheme is Yancy’s unsuspecting best friend: Rogelio (John Ortiz).

Rogelio brought his arm to Yancy and provoked him to get involved in the investigation (when he knew that all he had to do was ask Yancy to ignore her) and the proof that he is the one who killed Phinney is that he was ready to kill Madeleine, but, when he bumped into Yancy and Rosa, he pretended to go to the store to see if she was okay. I’m warning you: Rogelio is a villain.
The loose end that I still haven’t tied up is the presence of Bonnie/Plover (Michelle Monaghan) in Yancy’s life. I’ve already guessed that the whole thing about provoking him to attack her husband and get suspended has to do with something that the detective hasn’t yet grasped, where he will be the scapegoat for something bigger.
Another guess is that yes, Christopher (who has two arms and threatened Neville in the Bahamas) and Nick are identical twins and that Eve is cheating on one of them. Which one, are you still unsure of?
Very confusing? Not at all. The series is very entertaining and perfectly paced. Let’s keep theorizing!
