I’m happy to be among those selected to watch season 4 of Only Murders In the Building in advance, which premieres on August 27, but I won’t give any spoilers or talk about my theory about who killed the person, especially since I haven’t seen the final episode, so I have no arguments to support my bet. That said, get ready: season 4 is wonderful and until the last episode, the twists and turns leave us laughing and intrigued at the same time.
Of course, I’ve been an open fan of the series since its premiere and, with each new season, I’m even more enchanted by the intelligence and originality of the writers. What would be a relatively simple story is actually complex: neighbors who love true crime podcasts get together to investigate a death in their building, creating a podcast that ends up not only solving the mystery but also turning them into celebrities. One murder, apparently, leads to another and with that, the fact that the crimes necessarily have to happen in Arconia, the building where they live, is brilliantly dodged with perfect arguments and does not limit them in any way. It is not an easy task!

We will return to Manhattan immediately after the death that closed the previous season, which, so far, is my favorite. Not only did it bring Meryl Streep to the cast, but it was a musical with great songs and a metalanguage narrative about the Broadway theater universe. Now, following the formula, we will enter the Hollywood universe, since the podcast Only Murders in the Building will be turned into a movie and the main trio will have to deal with the stars cast to play them in the movies: Zach Galifianakis, Eugene Levy, and Eva Longoria. Of course, this is the beginning of several jokes about the behavior of the stars, the executives, the writers and directors, the algorithms, the business, and the price of fame. They all work because the rhythm and chemistry of the trio Martin Short, Selena Gomez, and Steve Martin are at their peak, and for those who have followed their growth, it is simply a delight to see them again.

After the premiere, I will talk about the series again, I promise! I am very sorry that it lost its chances at the Emmy Awards because they classify The Bear – a drama – as a comedy, but some bet that in 2024 Only Murders In The Building can reverse this situation and win the award for Best Comedy Series of the year. For me, it has always been the case! And yes, I can’t wait to see if I guessed who killed the person! I guessed right in the first and third seasons, but I got it wrong in the second. Will I prove to be a good detective?
