We are officially back at the Arconia and Only Murders in The Building, exactly where we said goodbye at the end of 2022 at the party of our favorite podcasters celebrating the Broadway hit. WE know that another crime happened at what has to be the most dangerous address in Manhattan, because in recent years it has been almost one crime per year, but it is good to ignore this fact and enjoy. Yes, True Crime fans enjoy a good mystery.

Who killed Sazz, did he really want to kill Charles?
The mystery is, as in previous seasons, “simple”. Sazz was killed by a sniper when entering Charles’ apartment, but obviously, we will not find out in the 1st episode of season 4. And believe me, the season is once again wonderful and full of twists and turns. And I’m telling you, I guessed the culprit right in two seasons (the 1st and 3rd), but I got it really wrong in the 2nd. I’ve seen all the episodes except the final one (I can’t talk about them) and it’s not easy to deduce who killed or why they killed.
I have my theories, but they’re all up until the penultimate episode, with several holes. The killer needs to know Arconia intimately to use the secret passages and the incinerator, so that narrows down the suspects a lot. On the other hand, Only Murders in the Building, the podcast, revealed the secret passages and secrets of Arconia to the world, so there’s room in the script for some kind of surprise.

That said, let’s get back to the other murders. All of them had a personal connection between the killer and the victim, and the person who died wasn’t exactly popular. So, how and why did they want to kill Charles? Or Sazz? It was someone who was following their steps closely, that’s obvious, but the motivation is important and remains a mystery until the end. Even though he’s not popular, no one “hates” Charles and – as far as we know – even less Sazz. Without any plausible clues, we’re left in the dark.
The quotes and the well-structured script
If there’s one detail that puts Only Murders in The Building in the category of brilliant, it’s the script. And right away they play with the brilliant Once Upon a Time in the West in the duplication of what could be the parallel here. The podcasters are called and sign a deal with Hollywood, in the West.
In the third season we had a lesson on how a Broadway production works, here are details on how films are made. The arrogance and practicality of the studio executives, with their grandiose titles, the insecurity and creativity of the screenwriters, the bold visions of the directors, the egocentric and uncomfortable actors, the despised stuntmen… we’ll see all of this in different ways. From the fake scenarios to the awkward encounter with the stars who will play them in the movies (Eugene Levy, Eva Longoria and Zach Galifianakis), Charles (Steve Martin), Mabel (Selena Gomez) and Oliver (Martin Short) are also introduced to the Paramount executive who will produce the film (Molly Shannon), the directors (Siena Werber and Catherine Cohen) and the screenwriter (Jim Ha) and they will all be important, as we will see.

Since the series is about murders in a building (which Mabel tells us that she hears us and that it is a limiting flaw), Los Angeles does not hold us back, and in the first episode they return to New York, where they finally understand that there has been another death and that they will not need to dig up a cold case or anything close to where they live for the new season: only murderers in the building and they are once again faced with a mystery to solve.
Shall we talk about the music? One of the great secrets of Only Murders in the Building‘s success is the series’ dynamic, powerful, and versatile musical theme. Composed by Siddhartha Khosla, the soundtrack can be dramatic, romantic, tense, and terrifying at the same time, with breathtaking creative superiority.
There are no songs apart from the central melody, as was the case last season; it’s the same theme as always, but listen to the first episode: it changes the whole mood with different arrangements and tempos, but always with the same melody. Sensational.
I’m dying to find out who the culprit is once again. Shall we start theorizing?
