The film Maria, starring Angelina Jolie as Maria Callas, will premiere at the 2024 Venice Film Festival (the actress is already in Italy) and today Netflix confirmed that it will be the platform for the film, at least in the United States.
“Starring Oscar winner Angelina Jolie, Maria is a creative imagination and psychological portrait of Maria Callas. The film is set in the 1970s, near the end of Callas’ life. A story about a woman who lived from the 20s to the 70s, a woman who burned her voice, her life, doing (what she loved) her work”, the platform’s account shared on X. “From acclaimed director Pablo Larraín and written by Oscar nominee Steven Knight. Coming soon to Netflix in the US”, it concluded.
It is interesting in terms of business because the two previous films in the trilogy, Jackie and Spencer, are on MAX. Likewise, the announcement that it will be “coming soon” to the platform indicates that its run in theaters will be extremely short (which is not the best scenario if we think about the Oscars).
On the other hand, Maria is an art film, with a smaller scale of promotion and production, and being on Netflix is a strong endorsement from one of the most active studios at the moment.
Social media also came out with a scene of Angelina as Callas. She repeats the singer’s voice inflection, but without exaggerating. I’m so curious! Check it out below. What do you think?
