In the United States, Candomblé is treated as Magic, full of clichés and stereotypes that use the religious belief “exported” from Africa to Latin cultures, whether in comic or horror formats. In Bad Monkey, it has been no different, although the series plays more with the American concept of the “Florida Man” – which involves real but incredible stories – making everything absurd that we see possible.
Dragon Queen – a great role played by Jodie Turner-Smith, extremely funny and mysterious – is the priestess who is involved (without knowing it) with all the loose ends of the ongoing crime, which began with a scam, turned into a scheme and is now a series of increasingly violent murders. Everything points to the “magic” of the orishas helping one of the sides. In this case, Neville has already had some return on his investment.

While the locals and Nick and Eve’s henchmen are acting and creating chaos on the island, in Miami Yancy only gets into worse trouble trying to figure out what’s going on and arrest the criminal duo. So far, he already knows that Nick faked his own death and eliminated the witnesses, but he still hasn’t connected all the dots of something that is getting more and more confusing.
The story is shallow, but the narrative is so entertaining that it makes up for the investment of hours. There are still some parallel plots (like Bonnie’s) that don’t fit together, but we’ll see how they’ll be handled. But one thing is certain: the Dragon Queen will prove the power of her magic.
