Suspense and Intrigue: New Characters and Revelations in Slow Horses

I know that last week I complained about the silly suspense of forcing us to think that River Cartwright (Jack Lowden) could be dead when we knew that wouldn’t be the case thanks to the season trailer. It could certainly be told in flashback, but Slow Horses is too good for a cheap trick like that. And it proves it now when it ties together what really happened in David Cartwright’s (Jonathan Pryce) house on that rainy night. Yes, with more and great suspense.

The important thing is that the episode connects the three facts of the previous one, without revealing too much. 1) Someone really wants to kill David, to settle something from the past. He may be advancing rapidly towards dementia, but he is not crazy in his paranoia. 2) The assassin David killed looked like River, another credit to him for not being “crazy”. 3) The identity of the terrorist who blew up the mall is false, but it indicates that it is someone from within MI5.

That is basically what WE discovered, Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman) is more involved, of course. Lamb has two problems: 1) even though he always pretends to be indifferent, he is worried about River, who is alive and investigating the attack on his grandfather, which takes him to the French countryside, and 2) there are two new employees at Slough House and he doesn’t like them (what a surprise!) or trust them either. Otherwise, we have a “classic Lamb”: rude, disgusting, and suspicious.

On Diana Tarvener’s (Kristin Scott Thomas) side, things are not easy, her new boss is incompetent and anxious because he feels nervous and insecure about his new role. She is committed to discovering the real author and motive behind the terrorist attack on the mall. Interestingly, I’m rooting for her this time.

And, in France, in the middle of an extremely suspicious, deserted, and isolated city, River arrives at a passionate mansion that is used – from the evidence she found – for military training. Before that, we had the first introduction of Hugo Weaving as a suspicious guy who is the one after David and yes, Jackson Lamb. He tries to attack River, but someone saves him, leaving us still unable to contextualize everything that is happening. I’m still scratching my head to understand how “Bertrand”, the agent killed by David, looks so much like River, but we’ll find out soon…
