My suspects for the murder in the building: who killed Sazz? (spoilers)

I’m committed to not getting ahead of myself with the episodes of Only Murders in the Building that I’ve already seen, so I can’t complete my list of suspects for Sazz’s murder. However, since we’ve reached the halfway point of the season, I’m going to start rehearsing my guesses. I’ve had access to the penultimate episode and I can assure you: it’s not easy to point out the culprit(s).

First, let’s summarize the episode.

Charles (Steve Martin), Oliver (Martin Short), and Mabel (Selena Gomez) are already so professional that developing the script and investigating the crime is already a delightful rhythm of trust and friendship for them. There are many loose clues, but nothing that effectively points to who killed Sazz (Jane Lynch) and whether she was a target or it was a mistake.

The ‘westies’, the residents of the West Tower, are involved in another criminal scheme, but they have nothing to do with movies or Sazz. They have an agreement with the very suspicious Dudenoff (Griffin Dunne), who was in Sazz’s notes and who currently officially lives in Portugal. The scheme is to maintain rent values at prices not adjusted to the market and to sublet the properties. For now, and I emphasize that everything can change, that bunch of strange people in strange apartments are not among the suspicious crowd. Oh! And the voice on the radio is also nobody, they claim, despite her warning that the last person who asked for Dudenoff turned up dead. Come to think of it…

But let’s get back to the trio. Oliver is more worried about the physical distance from Loretta (Meryl Streep) and the fact that she is apparently seeing another man, which is why his mind is not on the podcast like in other seasons. To investigate what is happening with his girlfriend, he created a fake alter ego on Instagram, Ronnie, and has been talking to her as if he were a fan. Mabel convinces him to stop and delete the account before Loretta finds out and breaks up with him.

Speaking of Mabel, she broke into Dudenoff’s apartment to force him to show up and so she asks Howard (Michael Cyril Creighton) to stay put because no one can leave the apartment empty. So, “out of nowhere” they put a flyer under the door asking for an audition for the film Only Murders in the Building, and OF COURSE, he’s going to try. He doesn’t get in, but I mention this scene because it puts both Bev Melon (Molly Shannon) and the Brother Sisters in the Arconia, and for me, it includes them on my list of suspects.

Charles, Mabel, and Oliver discover the bar that Sazz frequented and where the stuntmen met. What’s relevant here is that there they meet Ben Glenroy’s (Paul Rudd) stuntman, Glen Stubbins. In an embarrassingly forced performance, just like his Irish accent, Paul Rudd irritates us more than he makes us laugh. But Glen, who spent 15 years working as Ben, has been unemployed since the actor was murdered and harbors a grudge against the podcasters. Everything changes when he manages to negotiate a nomination to be in the film Only Murders in the Building and starts helping them gather more information about Sazz’s last steps.

To do this, Charles talks to Dr. Maggie, the chiropractor who took care of the stuntmen. She reveals that Sazz was planning to retire and transition to a new career, without clarifying what it would be. She also complained about a difficult relationship in her life, which Charles assumes is him, but we can think of Jan (Amy Adams).

In a moment of his dreams, Charles remembers that Sazz said that when he retired he would open a stunt school and he already had the location. With that, the three of them fall to New Jersey and see the deserted area where the school is. Hearing a noise, in the nearby warehouse they go there. To everyone’s surprise, they find Bev, armed and threatening the three of them. “Don’t move, or I’ll blow your brains out,” is the last line of the episode.

Although the end of the episode and the explanation in the next one “disguise” and contextualize what is happening to Bev, she is on my list of most likely suspects. Yes, the previous season already put the crime on the shoulders of producers, but Bev is providentially everywhere when we least expect it and has a star like Molly Shannon putting on a show. She has something more to be revealed.

In the same logic, and leading my suspicions, is Glen Stubbins, the clumsy stuntman who is against podcasters having lost his livelihood with the death of Ben Glenroy last season. It was quite a coincidence that the bottle that would have to be fake to break on Charles’ head was real, don’t you think? Paul Rudd‘s return ties the two seasons together and so far he’s the one with the motive and even access, I’m just not sure of his aim…

We’ll also see that Dudenoff, even abroad (as far as we know!), has an involvement with Charles and that’s enough for Sazz to have him mapped out and what’s more, it was from his apartment that the shot was fired. But we’ll have to wait until the end of the season to find out more about him.

Some fans point to Scott Bakula as the main suspect, and I don’t rule him out. He is the current boyfriend of Joy (Andrea Martin), Charles’ ex, who was jealous of Sazz and is very hurt by the actor. She has already killed the fish, broken everything, and was furious at having been deceived by Charles. Remember that she lived in his apartment, so she knows a lot about Arconia. Scott may have helped her, but I don’t rule it out because Joy is still one of my biggest suspects.

Finally: are we sure that Sazz really died? She was with Jan, who escaped from prison and easily convinced Charles that she wasn’t guilty. Somewhere on my list, the two of them set up Sazz’s death so that, when Jan escaped, they could be together somewhere. Yes, on the list of suspects for “who killed Sazz”, there is Sazz herself.

Will I get it right this season? So far, I’ve only gotten it wrong in the second one!!!! Let’s see…
