Bad Monkey: Gracie’s Evolution and its Implications for the Plot

I started out loving Bad Monkey, everyone’s performances are impeccable, but I’ve reached a point where I like the Previously in Bad Monkey that opens the episodes more than the entire plot itself. We haven’t really taken any steps toward new information, so either we’re in for a big surprise or we’re really going nowhere.

Basically, this week’s episode served to show how Gracie became a Mãe de Santo, which in the series is “Queen Dragon”. It sounds silly because although I don’t know much about Candomblé, as a Brazilian I know the bare minimum and it seems like a joke to call her by that code name. But again: I’m guessing where I have no knowledge. To clarify this issue, we see that Gracie was chosen by her grandmother to follow the family tradition, but she had other dreams, and only after a disappointment in love with a foreigner did she embrace her vocation. This explains the coup he tried to pull on Eve and Nick.

Eve, who has been absolutely mind-blowing us with her wickedness and cleverness so far, was the one who managed to easily kidnap her rival, humiliating Gracie and – for now – showing herself to be unbeatable. The Dragon Queen is willing to do anything to leave the island, and this leaves her isolated and in crisis with her grandmother. Basically, this was the delivery of the week for this part of the story.

In Miami, Yancy’s focus is on arresting Mendez and getting his job back. He manages to do both, with Rogelio injured in the process. With that, the detective meets his girlfriend, Rosa, at the hospital, where she is helping Neville.

The fisherman reveals everything he knows about Nick and his operations and even gives him proof of Nick’s status in the form of a photo. That was all that was needed for the investigation to be officially reopened, something that interests the FBI as well.

Bonnie’s on-the-run-turn-in sequence is once again out of context with the other crimes in the series, but she assures us that she no longer wants to escape. And yes, she is arrested. Do we care about that? I doubt it.

We said goodbye to suspicious men lurking around Yancy’s house. What now?
