We know that Marvel’s next phase would be a revival of a new group of Avengers and the entry of those who were in other studios, but the first step of the “group” is the Thunderbolts* movie, whose trailer anticipating the release before May 2025 was released today. I thought it was incredible.
If you, like me, are not a Marvel expert, here are the basic explanations. The Thunderbolts* are a group of superheroes in the Marvel universe that consists mainly of reformed villains – or heroes who needed redemption – and who, after the apparent death of the Avengers and the Fantastic Four, take this position to become a force for good. They are selected by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) and as we see in the trailer, just like the Avengers, they don’t like each other at first, but they start working together.

Thunderbolts* should be the last film of Phase Five of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and we realize that both Florence Pugh (Yelena Belova) and Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barns / Winter Soldier) will have leadership (but Bucky eventually takes the place of de facto leader). To the sound of Pixies (Where is My Mind), the images parade the “villains”: Red Guardian (David Harbour), John Walker (Wyatt Russell), Ava Starr / Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), and Antonia Dreykov (Olga Kurylenko) and they try to understand what is happening to them, even while they fight each other. It’s fun and has the same Avengers vibe.
But the big highlight is seeing in more detail the entrance of Lewis Pullman, who will be Robert Reynolds, or Bob, also known as Sentry. He is known for having immense strength, comparable to that of the Hulk, and abilities such as flight, invulnerability, and energy manipulation. The Sentry also has a complex duality, as he is constantly tormented by his evil alter ego, the Void. In other words, he is the man. (Interestingly, Lewis was romantically paired with Brie Larson, Captain Marvel, in the Chemistry Lessons series).

Thunderbolts* was originally scheduled for 2024 but cast changes and the writers’ and actors’ strikes made Deadpool & Wolverine the only MCU film in theaters this year. It looks like it will be worth the wait.
Much of the humor with them is precisely the fact highlighted in the trailer that, among the antagonists, they are the least villainous. That is why they form a squad that is almost always in charge of carrying out dirty or politically sensitive missions for the Avengers, but the psychologically unstable nature of most of them always doubles the risk of things going wrong.
Honestly? I was excited!
