One of the most unexpected farewells of 2024, despite her advanced age, was that of Maggie Smith, announced today by her family. At 89 years old, the cause was not immediately announced.

Winner of an Oscar for Best Actress for The Prime of Jean Brodie, she was respected on stage, on screen, and on TV with equal reverence, which was deserved, by the way.
Her biting humor and her irritation with stardom are legendary, even often transferred to her characters. She knew in advance that it would be inevitable that her legacy would be marked by two characters for whom she had little appreciation: Professor Minerva McGonagall from the Harry Potter franchise and the unbearable Lady Violet Crawley from Downton Abbey, but these were some of her most recent and notable works given the popularity of the works (and number of films and seasons, of course).
Maggie played noblewomen or common women with the same naturalness, unforgettably using her expressive eyes. Her most beloved films by fans are, of course, the one that won her an Oscar, but A Room with a View and the more recent The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and The Lady in the Van (which earned her last Oscar nomination) are also worth mentioning. It is inevitable to say goodbye to one of the most complete actresses of recent times, but yes, she will be missed. Rest in Power.

Suggestions for finding great performances by Maggie Smith, besides Harry Potter and Downton Abbey.
The Prime of Jean Brodie (1969)
The Lady in the Van (2015)
Sister Act (1995)
Othello (1965)
A Room with a View (1985)
