Leighton Meester joins the cast of The Buccaneers

After having destroyed an unfinished and already weak book, Apple TV is coming with a second season of The Buccaneers. And a new name in the cast has been stirring up social media: Leighton Meester has been confirmed in the cast, although her role has not yet been revealed.

Yes, Leighton will forever be remembered as Blair Waldorf from Gossip Girl, but today, at 38 years old, she will certainly be among the mature women in the plot. I tried to rack my brains to imagine who she could play, but due to the unfinished nature of the novel, the list of characters may vary depending on the editions and adaptations. The biggest suspicion is that she will play the biological mother of Nan St. George (Kristine Frøseth), although my bet is that the biological mother is Laura Testvalley (Simone Kirby).

The story of The Buccaneers is taking on a very different tone in this revised version. The story begins in New York, where the St. George sisters and their friends, despite being wealthy, have difficulty being accepted by the established social elite. Determined to find husbands of high social standing, they decide to travel to England, where the British aristocracy is open to marriages with American heiresses due to the need for money.

In England, the young women quickly integrate into aristocratic society. They participate in balls and social events, attracting the attention of several nobles. Nan St. George stands out for her vivacity and intelligence, catching the attention of Guy Thwarte, a sensitive and introspective aristocrat.

Virginia St. George marries Lord Seadown, a man with financial difficulties but of high social standing. Conchita Closson marries Lord Richard Marable, a marriage that initially seems advantageous but faces challenges due to cultural and personality differences, and Lizzy Elmsworth finds a stable marriage, but without great passions. Nan becomes involved in a love triangle between Guy Thwarte and the Duke of Tintagel, a powerful and influential man. Despite her attraction to Guy, Nan ends up marrying the Duke due to social pressure and family expectations.

In the second season, we will see that Nan’s marriage to the Duke of Tintagel will be unhappy. She feels trapped in a loveless relationship and begins to question the choices she has made. At the same time, Guy Thwarte continues to harbor feelings for Nan but respects her marriage.

Although the book ended abruptly due to the death of Edith Wharton, leaving the final fate of Nan and the other characters open, writer Marion Mainwaring completed the work, suggesting possible resolutions to the conflicts, but leaving room for the reader’s interpretation.
