Can I confess? Of the female antagonists in Batman, I stopped at Catwoman and practically ignored the others, so the entrance of Sofia Falcone (Cristin Milioti) in The Penguin, the MAX series that is to tell the story of one of Batman’s iconic enemies, caught me since the first episode and I have been open-mouthed with the daughter of Gotham’s crime boss. And that’s thanks to Cristin Milioti‘s talent.
The Penguin series highlights Sofia Falcone, complex and ambitious, and her intriguing dynamic with Oswald Cobblepot in Gotham’s crime scene. This is not the actress’s first work on the platform. She was in the series Made for Love, a dark comedy and science fiction based on the novel of the same name by Alissa Nutting, but which was canceled and removed from MAX. Cristin became more prominent when she joined the cast of How I Met Your Mother, but she has also appeared in Once, The Wolf of Wall Street, and, more recently, Palm Springs. But if until now we had to resort to Google to find out who she is, from now on I suspect it will be different.

Cristin comes from a strong theater background, starring in musicals, and even won a Grammy and was nominated for a Tony for Once, I’m betting on at least one Emmy nomination for The Penguin. And what better way than playing Sofia Falcone!
Sofia appeared in the Batman universe in the comic book series Batman: The Long Halloween, which explores Batman’s fight against organized crime in Gotham City. She is the daughter of Carmine Falcone, one of Gotham’s most powerful mafia bosses (who was killed at the end of the Batman movie, starring Robert Pattinson). A strong and determined woman, deeply loyal to her family, especially her father, Sofia seeks revenge against those she considers responsible for the downfall of the Falcones. Her character is complex, often shifting between being an ally and an antagonist to Batman, depending on the circumstances.
Sofia Falcone’s presence in Batman stories adds layers of intrigue and tension, especially when it comes to family dynamics and the power of organized crime in the city. In addition, her personal history and motivations help to explore themes of loyalty and revenge within the Gotham universe.

Her supporting role to Oswald Cobblepot (Colin Farrell) is logical because he, who will be known as the Penguin, is Batman’s antagonist who is always involved in illegal activities and deals with Gotham City’s criminal underworld. He was a captain of the Falcones, but we know he will take them down.
The first two were murdered by him, but he is managing to get away with it without being discovered. Through manipulation, blackmail or simply taking advantage of opportunities to expand his own criminal empire, he wants to control everything. Cunning and calculating, Penguin does not underestimate Sofia, a mistake that the others often make.
In the first episodes, we see that Sofia spent years being treated/tortured in Arkham and that she is still traumatized. Although in the series she is already identified as The Hangman, this identity in the comics took a while to be confirmed. We also know from the radio that she killed seven women, but in the comics, her targets were members of the Gotham City Police Department. The Hangman left clues in the form of Hangman puzzles at each crime scene, and we will probably see her repeat this in The Penguin.

Sofia and Oz develop a complex relationship that involves manipulation and temporary alliances, which begins at the end of the second episode. In the comics, Sofia initially approaches the Penguin to gain his trust and infiltrate his circle of power, pretending to be his ally, but in reality she has her own motives and plans to overthrow him and regain control of the city for the Falcone family. In the series, it is the opposite: Oz is pretending to help her.
The relationship between the two is marked by betrayals and power games, with Sofia using her charm and intelligence to manipulate the Penguin, while he tries to maintain his control over Gotham’s criminal underworld. Eventually, the true intentions of both are revealed, leading to a direct confrontation between them, which promises to end the excellent season on MAX.
I know you can understand me because rooting for psychopaths is wrong, but how can you not want Sofia to “win”? There are only six episodes, so we will soon find out.
