Why Watch It’s What’s Inside on Netflix

Stories about body swapping are nothing new in Hollywood, I can name at least three classics – Freaky Friday, All of Me, and Jumanji – to argue that the film It’s What’s Inside is one of the most original and well-told stories of the year and yes, it is about body swapping.

The film, which arrived on Netflix in early October, is simply sensational. Tense, fun, dramatic, and completely unexpected, it is a bath of innovation and creativity on top of a simple, yet complex, fun, and precise plot. Written and directed by Greg Jardin, with a young cast of unknown actors and produced by Colman Domingo, It’s What’s Inside is what Squid Games was four years ago: a precise social and behavioral study of how society acts and aspires today, disguised behind a seemingly harmless game.

The less you know about the story, the more enjoyable it is to follow, since the plot could be something that has already been tried before. The difference lies in the extremely well-tied details, the surprises and a spectacular soundtrack.

The synopsis says: The party before a wedding turns into an existential nightmare for a group of friends when one of them shows up with a briefcase containing a mysterious device capable of promoting body swapping. It is the beginning of a perverse game that brings to light secret truths, repressed desires and deep resentments.

Well, in an advertising language used accurately, It’s What’s Inside causes a pause in several issues of modern society: influencers, social networks, questionable narratives, greed, envy, frustration and recklessness. Yes, there are those who try to say that literally by switching bodies, someone could effectively change for the better by having experienced what the other person felt firsthand. Empathy in the veins? The message in the end may not be so optimistic.

There are critics who complain about the inexperience of the cast, but honestly it is one of the advantages to being able to get carried away. And if there is one thing that Netflix has already proven to us, it is that it understands mind games. And in this case, it is disturbing, different and fun. Faced with so much sameness and “real” stories, fantasy has never been so welcome. Even with all its chaos.
