For a brief moment, the sitcom Abbot Elementary seemed like it was going to win years of awards since it premiered in late 2021. That was before The Bear became the joke that no one likes of being clearly a drama series defined as a “comedy”. A forced stop that is still causing discussion, but that stopped the sitcom’s rise to the Hall of Legends.

Using the format of The Office, which is the mockumentary, Abbot Elementary was created by Quinta Brunson – who is also the main actress – and aired in prime time on ABC in the United States. The plot centers on a fictional kindergarten – Willard R. Abbott Elementary School – which is located in a deprived area of Philadelphia, predominantly black underfunded, and full of problems, but also has a team of teachers inspired to help children.
The series features several great actors, especially a favorite of the audience: Tyler James Williams, from Everybody Hates Chris. And if you haven’t seen it yet, you’re missing out on a genuine and quality comedy. The fourth season arrived on the platform this week.
A perfect time to do a recap, don’t you agree?

In the first season, we meet Janine Teagues, the optimistic second-grade teacher who wants to implement several changes at the school. And it is there that she meets Gregory Eddie, a substitute first-grade teacher with whom she connects in everything. There is also a team of documentary filmmakers recording the lives of teachers who work in poorly managed and underfunded schools.
The school is run by the inept and clueless Ava Coleman, and has teachers Melissa Schemmenti and Barbara Howard, mature and with great experience; Jacob Hill, a clumsy history teacher; and Mr. Johnson, the janitor, in addition to Gregory’s friend – who is dating Janine – Tariq, a former student of Abbot Elementary. This is a problem because Gregory quickly falls in love with Janine.
What has happened so far?
In the first season, we meet all the characters and they begin to relate to each other, even with their differences. The oldest teachers – Barbara and Melissa – hate any mention of changes, which is what Janine and Jacob keep suggesting. Gregory only joins to cover a period and has ambitions of being the school’s Principal, which doesn’t even seem impossible given Ava’s clear ineptitude.
Little by little, they overcome their prejudices and get together, while Gregory falls in love with Janine, without her realizing it. Eventually, she also starts to pay attention to her colleague and eventually breaks up with Tariq, paving the way for a possible romance at school.

The second season includes hilarious situations with the students and between the teachers, but Gregory and Janine’s almost-romance is the ‘drama’, with misunderstandings and disagreements. Although they confess their love for each other, the two decide to continue as friends.
The third season “takes” Janine out of school when her talent is identified and she is invited to work at the Department of Education, where she thinks she will be able to help the school more. She spends the season divided because she misses her students and her colleagues. Her friendship with Gregory is complex, because the two genuinely like each other, and, to the general delight of the fans, they decide to bet on romance.
Now we will meet everyone again in front of the official couple but with the same challenges inherent to school. You know what is guaranteed? Laughter, lots of laughter!
And now?
The Abbot Elementary team has already faced several challenges and now it will be no different. The creation of a luxury golf course in their area causes problems such as water and gas cuts in the middle of the school day, and traffic jams due to construction, among other things. Janine and Gregory are officially a couple, but, of course, even that will not be easy for the two.

Fans loved that there will be a crossover with another series, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and let’s face it: we already missed it!
It’s no wonder that the sitcom was nominated for 24 Emmy Awards upon its debut, winning four, including Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. Abbott Elementary also won three Golden Globes, one of which included the Golden Globe for Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy in 2023.
With Hacks‘ victory taking the lead from The Bear, there’s still some doubt as to whether a drama series about a comedian is a comedy. For me, Abbott Elementary and Only Murders in the Building are undoubtedly created to make us think while laughing. And I’m rooting for the teachers!
