Agatha All Along: The Connection to WandaVision

The complexity of the Marvel universe 16 years after Iron Man (ground zero) is paradoxically attractive and repellent, as we are immersed in a world of interconnected characters and parallel events that are difficult to follow. At the moment, I’m only interested in Agatha All Along as a continuation of WandaVision and a parallel to Dr. Strange, but if I dare to think ahead or to the side, I admit that I get lost. But I’m happy with my dedication because, after a long period of good but unbalanced content, the series is nothing short of wonderful. In this week’s episode, the path leads us to the identity and origin of the teenager, who is none other than Billy Maximov, son of Wanda and Vision.

Joe Locke shines in a solo episode and brings a lot of emotion to his story. Just like Cristin Millioti in Penguin, it’s as if the supporting character stole the spotlight and we could understand that his journey is infinitely more emotional and exciting than the main character’s. Obviously, it’s too early to make such a statement, but that’s the feeling!

The most specialized fans got it right and yes, the truth is that the young man is the incarnation of one of the twins Billy and Tommy. The episode takes us to a flashback of how the “body change” happened. Billy Kapplan’s bar mitzvah party is interrupted as a consequence of the end of WandaVision when Wanda has to get rid of the hexagon.

Shortly before, still during the celebrations, Kaplan does a palm reading with none other than Lilia Calderu in a tent at the party. The witch predicts a “long journey” ahead, one of “transformation and…” and also warns him that “Your lifeline is broken in two.” Visibly shaken by what she saw, but trying to calm things down, she still says “The Tower of Reverse” before Billy interrupts the consultation. Lilia advises him to live in the moment and when she sees that he forgot his jacket, she casts the spell of secrecy, forgetting it right away. She gives the jacket to a woman who appears to be Agatha disguised at the party, but we still don’t know why she’s there.

On the way home, the Kaplans suffer a horrible car accident and Billy is the most injured, lying unconscious in the back seat with his face covered in blood. That’s when we hear, Wanda say goodbye to her children and Billy Maximoff’s soul enters his body while he screams for his brother, “Tommy!”

Now Billy Maximoff adjusts to his new reality, and since everyone assumes he has amnesia, he feels out of place and in constant anguish. Years later, we see that he is in love, but he still doesn’t reveal the truth to his boyfriend, he only says that after the accident he started investigating what happened in Westview.

The source who helps Billy is none other than Ralph Bohner, who was used by Agatha as Wanda’s fake brother, Pietro, from the hex. It is during this conversation that Billy meets Agatha Harkness, who is under a spell but can help him.

From there, we see the first episode of Agatha All Along from another angle and the revelation that Billy wants to find his brother and, of course, his mother, the Scarlet Witch.

The episode weaves together in detail the connection between all the witch trials, how they all somehow crossed Billy’s path, and the importance of Agatha, the only witch to survive the end of the road, in the process. There are countless Easter eggs of what may yet come and references to all the suggestions of what is to come.

The darkest part is when we finally return to the end of episode 5 and Billy, now revealed, talks to Agatha, who has come out of the mud. Menacing and even frightening, Agatha confronts him about being a freeloading wizard like her, “You survived like witches have done for centuries. You saw an empty vessel and moved. So you broke the rules, that’s what kept you alive. That’s what makes you special, a wizard,” she says.

Agatha now knows exactly what Billy is looking for at the end of the road: Tommy. And off they go to the next test. And he warns: “I’m not that cool.”

Thought-provoking, well-written, and moving, Agatha All Along proves to be the perfect continuation of WandaVision and makes us want to root for the Avengers again.
