Who is the Real Killer in Only Murders in the Building?

The season of homages to cinema in Only Murders in the Building doesn’t quite excite us like the theater season, but it’s still wonderful. I’m a fan of the series, and so I recognize that the effort they’re making to surprise us has taken away the suspense of the plot, especially the parade of celebrities that still pop up throughout the season. Today it was director Ron Howard‘s turn.

The title of the episode is a reference to the classic Escape from the Planet of the Apes, but it’s not important or clear either: they quickly show how extras and special effects work in a film, but at this point, Charles (Steve Martin), Mabel (Selena Gomez) and Oliver (Martin Short) just want to know who the stunt double was that Sazz (Jane Lynch) protected and was disappointed with.

How do they get this latest clue? Yes, dismissing Glen Stubbins’ (Paul Rudd) guilt and hopefully finally killing him off the show. Rudd came back from the dead THREE times, I might be celebrating too soon. The fact is that the trio goes to the hospital, and bumps into an Irish nurse (RED FLAG!) who prevents them from talking to the stuntman who is still in a coma. The bartender (RED FLAG!) comes to visit Glen and tells them about Sazz’s protégé whose name no one knows and who she thought was going to kill her. Sorry, I knew who he was right away, but the episode dragged out the reveal.

Sazz met this mysterious man in a movie with Ron Howard and from there it’s Short and Martin’s gags about friendships on set, blah blah blah. Mabel goes after Bev (Molly Shannon), who is trying to rewrite Mabel’s part, the only one who doesn’t yet have a suitable voice. (YELLOW FLAG!). In exchange for Ron Howard’s contact, she agrees to talk to Marshall Pope (Jin Ha), and he starts to “shadow” her.

Well, Charles and Oliver follow the formula of The Odd Couple, where male opposites build the perfect male friendship and finally, instead of attacking each other, they admit to a friendship between them and a pact of commitment as friends. Since I never got on board with their mutual aggression, it seemed to me more like an unnecessarily tied link, but what matters is that when they bump into Ron Howard at his favorite Chinese restaurant in New York, they discover who Sazz’s protégé was, none other than… what a lack of surprise: Marshall, the screenwriter.

The revelation is made when he is alone with Mabel and she also finds the script for the film Only Murders In The Building in a box of Sazz’s beers, signed by the stuntwoman. So Marshall Pope is now not only the prime suspect for killing both Sazz and Glen, but he also stole the script from his former mentor to present as his own. What now, Mabel?

As we’ve reached the penultimate episode, it’s unlikely that Marshall will be freed from so many misunderstandings. The theft of the script explains why he has so much difficulty changing it when asked to, after all, he didn’t have the talent to write it. Still, he was a student of Dudenoff and knew both the Westies and the Brothers sisters, which means that EVERYONE could still be involved. And of course, let’s not forget Bev.

Having said all that, let’s get to the details that the writers of Only Murders in the Building threw at us and that are necessary to decipher the mystery:

1- The crime has to do with the previous seasons, including the FIRST and SECOND.

Jan (Amy Ryan) escaped from prison, as we know. And in the episode, it’s in the newspapers that Detective Daniel Kreps (Michael Rappaport) also escaped.

2- Unknown mysteries, such as who tried to poison Winnie, Oliver’s dog, will be solved and have to do with what is happening. How? Who? Why? We’ll see…

3- The Irish nurse is ULTRA suspicious. She blocked the podcasters, but let the killer in? And did we really see that Glen was killed? I already consider Paul Rudd immortal at this point.

4- The killer was in the hospital shortly before Mabel found Bev and Marshall. And from the shadow, he seems much bigger than the two of them. Yes, I insist that Sazz did not die and is covering up her escape to be with Jan.

5- Whoever “killed” Sazz had access to Dudenoff’s apartment, knows Arconia intimately and is involved with the film Only Murders In The Building. This last part seems to me to be the McGuffin of the season, especially because it was information planted by Sazz, but someone “tried” to kill Glen twice. Again: we do not see Sazz or Glen’s bodies. Could this be a plot by stuntmen trying to make a name for themselves?

My bet is that Sazz didn’t die (nor did Glen) and they’re all taking advantage of the podcasters’ innocence and blunders for something bigger. But clearly, Marshall isn’t alone.
