Shadows and Mysteries: Conclusion of Only Murders in the Building

The “cinematic” season of Only Murders in the Building was not as spectacular as the Broadway one, but it still remains one of the best comedy series in recent years. We reached the end of the 4th season solving the murder of Sazz (Jane Lynch), who, unfortunately, is indeed dead. Rest in Peace!

The killer was revealed in the penultimate episode and was the writer/stuntman Marshall Pope (Jin Ha). I really wanted to add more, to think of accomplices, but no, there was a certain ‘simplicity’: Marshall was Sazz’s protégé, who showed him the script she wrote for the film Only Murders in the Building and killed her so that she would not reveal to the world what she did.

The final episode, full of references to other films (such as Vertigo), sees Charles (Steve Martin) and Oliver (Martin Short) try to save Mabel (Selena Gomez), through initiatives and daring actions that show how far they have come time (and in absurdity).

Today they call themselves “detectives” because they really are. Although a bit drawn out, the conclusion is fun and just so I don’t make too many mistakes, I spent over a month accusing Jan (Amy Ryan) of a crime she didn’t commit; she kills Marshall to save the trio and avenge Sazz.

If it seemed quick and unpretentious, that’s because it was. The countless celebrities who took up our time didn’t line up to leave: most of them never came back or were even mentioned. The exception is Loretta (Meryl Streep), who marries Oliver but has to go live in New Zealand because of her series. She and Oliver are committed to making their relationship work because, as Loretta observes, the three of them can no longer stay away from each other.

While the writing is always perfect, and the homages are extremely clever, having such a large cast as this season confused us and made the solution a prank, not a revelation. It could have been better.

And of course, they already leave us hooked for the next season! And yes, it’s another murder in the building. The Arconia is the most dangerous address in the world.

Unfortunately, we lost another dear person: the doorman Lester. The reason? We don’t know. But it was shortly after the podcasters/detectives were approached by Nadia Caccimelio (Téa Leoni), the wife of missing mobster Nicky Caccimelio (who escaped from prison), who asks for their help in finding him. Now it makes sense why the news coverage of his escape is so prominent on television.

As Charles and Mabel explain to Mrs. Caccimelio, they only investigate crimes in the Arconia. And she mysteriously warns: but this crime has to do with the building. Again? That’s right.

After Broadway and then Cinema, now we will have Mafia! But that will happen at the end of 2025 or only in 2026.
