Thanks to the charisma, talent, and beauty of Rebecca Ferguson, who in 2023 seemed to be everywhere, whether in series or films – Dune, Mission Impossible, and Silo – the Apple TV Plus sci-fi series was one of the biggest hits of the year, delivering a plot full of twists and turns and mystery.

Silo is the adaptation of Hugh Howey‘s novel trilogy that places Earth in a dystopian future where human survival is only possible inside a giant underground silo, with 144 levels and housing around 10,000 people. Everyone lives in society but is always watched and follows regulations that they believe are intended to protect them. Those who dare to question the rules or are curious about the outside world are judged and exiled to the inhospitable outside world, where they die. Engineer Juliette Nichols (Ferguson), who works on the generators in the lower levels of the silo, becomes involved in the investigation of a friend’s murder and ends up discovering secrets that not only threaten her life but the structure of the silo.
In the final episode, however, what seemed to be the big lie – people lived confined when the world outside was still perfect – was nothing more than the truth, so the question remains: why make people believe that there is a habitable world when there is not? We said goodbye to the clever Juliette when she was exiled from the Silo, but we discovered that there are multiples like the one she lived in and this is one of the parts to be explored in the second season that premieres on the 15th.
Plot of the Book and Series: First Season
The first book, Silo, was the basis for the 1st season and introduced the fear of the few humans who live in an underground silo, isolated from the outside world because they believe that the surface is toxic and uninhabitable. Among those who suspect that the truth is not quite that are the couple Allison Becker (Rashida Jones), an IT technician, and the sheriff, Holston Becker (David Oyelowo), who die separately while trying to escape the silo. But they inadvertently bring Juliette into the mystery when her boyfriend – who helped Allison – turns up dead. She begins to question the rules and secrets about the world beyond the silo and as she investigates her boyfriend’s death, she uncovers conspiracies about the true purpose of the silo and what lies beyond it, including some secrets from her past.

The first season follows the main storyline of the book but with significant adaptations in characters and events. Some of these changes include a deeper look into the motivations of the secondary characters and Juliette’s personal life, which helps to build a denser emotional and visual context for the audience. The season ends on a similar note to the book, with Juliette beginning to unravel the dark secrets of the silo and facing the consequences of her search.
Differences Between the Book and the Series
- Character Expansion: In the series, some characters gain greater complexity and development, while others are introduced to increase dramatic tension and enrich the narrative. The series explores more of Juliette’s personal life and relationships, something that is not as detailed in the book.
- Visual Aspects and Atmosphere: The series takes advantage of the visual environment to create a claustrophobic feeling, with lighting and design that accentuate the isolation and oppressive nature of the silo, something that the book leaves more to the reader’s imagination.
- Conspiracies and Suspense: The series places a greater focus on the secret organization that controls the information within the silo, and some revelations happen more gradually, which creates ongoing suspense and sustains the pace of the episodes.

Expectations for the Second Season
The second season should continue to follow Juliette as she explores more about the true nature of the silo and the mysteries surrounding the outside world. In the second book of the trilogy, Shift, the narrative delves deeper into the origins of the silos and reveals more about the people who created them. The series could follow this path, alternating between the present and the past, and including these flashbacks to explore the construction and the reasons behind the silos.
What should be in the plot:
- Expansion of the Mythology: The origins of the silos, the reasons behind their creation, and the people involved in this project could be explored, bringing a new level of intrigue to the narrative.
- Power Struggles: The series will likely delve deeper into the rivalries and tensions between factions within the silo, as more people begin to question the rules.
- Exploration of the Outside World: A persistent question is what really exists outside the silo. The series should address this question more openly and, perhaps, bring in characters who have already had contact with the outside world or who have tried to escape.
We will reunite with much of the original cast, but there will be new faces The characters will also be there, which is to be expected since Juliette will be entering another silo. Among the familiar faces are Tim Robbins, who returns as Mayor (and villain) Bernard Holland; Common as the dubious Robert Sims; Harriet Walter as Martha Walker; and Iain Glen as Jules’ father, the doctor Pete Meadows. And we’ll have Steve Zahn as Solo, a hermit who hasn’t lived with humans for decades.
There’s so much to decipher!
