Princess of Wales Shines with Historic Jewel at Public Event

For those who follow the Royal Family, you quickly learn to observe the jewelry that women wear at public events. Notoriously, the Queen sent subtle “messages” by choosing brooches that were never absent from her wardrobe, and Princess Diana shone with several pieces that were either hers or part of the Crown collection, such as her engagement ring and the pearl choker that matched a sapphire brooch. Why would it be any different with Catherine, Princess of Wales?

The Crown Collection has more than 100 pieces and 23 thousand precious stones, which are loaned on different occasions to members of the Royal Family, but it is not like a store, where the princess goes in and chooses the piece she wants. When she was alive, the Queen determined what and when could be worn, today that role is with King Charles. But that is a detail. What the world is talking about today is Catherine’s rare appearance at yet another public event, signaling her gradual return to “normal.”

Catherine was alongside her husband, Prince William, and King Charles at the welcoming ceremony at the Horse Guards Parade on the first day of the Emir of the State of Qatar’s visit to the United Kingdom. And it is just the first appearance of others during the visit. The princess’s look drew attention to herself with yet another perfect choice of a burgundy coat by Alexander McQueen, which is both a shade that matches the Christmas season and is the predominant color on the Qatari flag, signaling respect and homage to the guests. But it was Elizabeth’s four-row Japanese pearl choker, said to be one of the sovereign’s favorites, that drew the most attention.

Composed of four strands of pearls and a diamond clasp, the pearls were a gift from the Japanese government to Elizabeth II in the 1970s and Catherine wore them to the Queen’s funeral. The Queen reportedly commissioned the necklace from royal jeweler Garrard to commemorate her first state visit to Japan. She has worn the necklace on other occasions, but it was in the 1980s, when Diana appeared wearing it, that the choker achieved the status of fame it enjoys today.

The Queen began lending the necklace to Catherine in 2017 so that she could wear it to the dinner for the 70th wedding anniversary of Elizabeth II and Prince Philip. Since then, the princess has worn the choker again on other occasions, signaling her favoritism for the piece. When she wore it to both Prince Philip’s and the Queen’s funerals, it was seen as a meaningful and personal tribute to the monarch.

At today’s event, Catherine was carrying a quilted Chanel bag with an enameled handle from the French brand’s fall 2016 collection and paired the choker with Bahraini pearl earrings, also from the Royal collection and also designed to honor the monarchs of Qatar. The princess’s choice has once again been praised for using her family heirlooms in the same way that Elizabeth II did for visits involving soft diplomacy. This seems to be the royal way and the tradition that Catherine maintains.
