Keira Knightley and Ben Whishaw shine in Black Doves

If the espionage genre had “disappeared,” I would even say that there is a “return,” but somehow in the world of disinformation, spies are on the rise. I will address this in another post, of course. Especially since according to “fiction,” several independent agencies are operating around the world, but with a foothold in London, for the most part. Every platform has a spy to call its own in 2024, Netflix has more than one. But the spies in Black Doves are already among my favorites, especially because I am a fan of Ben Whishaw and Keira Knightley, but also because the series is great.

When Keira Knightley played Domino Harvey, in the movie Domino I thought she was great in the fight scenes and with firearms. However, as a “serious” actress, she spent the other 21 years in period or dramatic films (excluding the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy), so I love her ‘return’ to the action genre.

Ben Whishaw for the last two generations has been Q from the 007 franchise, but he’s a renowned British actor, known for his versatility in film, television, and theater, famous for his ability to play complex and introspective characters, and in 2018 he won an Emmy for his performance as Norman Scott in the miniseries A Very English Scandal, in 2018, alongside Hugh Grant. But, for those who don’t listen to the dubbed version, perhaps his most popular role is the lovable bear Paddington, from the films of the eponymous franchise. As he is best remembered for his emotional and vulnerable performances, which explore deep human themes, he is special when he enters the world of gunfire and fighting.

Black Doves has been compared to The Agency for putting the spies’ personal lives on the same level as the action, but I find it even more interesting: it mixes humor, adventure, good dialogue, and a story that, although complex, is straightforward. And London has never been so beautiful!

Do you know what makes Black Doves one of the best spy series at the moment? ORIGINALITY. It doesn’t come from books, games, or remakes. What a relief! So here we meet Helen Webb (Knightley), a spy who for years has been revealing her politician husband’s secrets to a secret organization called Black Doves. The story gains momentum when her lover, Jason, is murdered. This leads Helen to a dangerous investigation alongside Sam (Whishaw), a longtime friend, involving the London underworld and an imminent geopolitical crisis.

All the crimes end up being connected and it’s not easy to identify exactly who the antagonist is, but it’s an interesting journey because it brings a Christmassy London into an exciting and action-packed story about friendship and sacrifice. It’s only episodes, but it looks like a sequel. I want more!
