In Hollywood, nothing is created, everything is copied.
The maxim that has probably been around since my grandmother’s time has never been discarded or outdated. But combining the obvious and what has already been done does not always work, as is the case with Fly Me to the Moon, the romantic comedy starring Channing Tatum and Scarlett Johansson. The love story about a con-advertising agent who helps in a plot to “pretend that man has stepped on the moon” was not a success in theaters, but is perfect for streaming.
On the eve of NASA’s historic Apollo 11 lunar landing, marketing specialist Kelly Jones (Johansson), hired to fix NASA’s public image, is secretly hired by the FBI to help with the government’s marketing campaign, which takes her to Florida and into the life of launch director Cole Davis (Tatum). To make matters worse, when the White House considers the mission too important to fail, Jones is instructed to stage a fake lunar landing as a backup, and the countdown really begins. Was what the world saw fake or real?

It may sound absurd, but there is a conspiracy theory that the American government hired an American studio to make the images broadcast on TV in 1969 look like they were real and Fly Me to the Moon jokes about this all the time.
If it were taken seriously, the film would be a disaster, but since it is a comedy, it is just cute. Tatum is not convincing in his role and the chemistry with Scarlett is colder than the universe, but the proposal was never to invent the wheel or do something that would change the world. It is a simple story, shot to entertain us without going into historical details or dramatic facts. Everything is easy and resolves itself.
The failure in theaters and the success on streaming reinforce all the clichés of Fly Me to the Moon: if it’s on the right platform, it lands without turbulence. Therefore, this is a fun comedy about a space race that could end up being a great Christmas movie. Its leadership among the most-watched movies suggests this is confirmed.
