There are only two episodes left to end (the first season?) of Dune: Prophecy and speculation about “who is Desmond Hart” is in full swing. In the official images of the penultimate episode, still, without a confirmed title, there is nothing that can confirm the most recurring theory that he is Vorian Atreides.

The biggest question of the season is: who is Desmond Hart?

The bet that Desmond is Valya Harkonnen’s (Emily Watson) arch enemy in disguise is based on what the books suggest, because there is no Desmond Hart in the pages, but Vorian effectively ‘disappears’ for a while in the story. Since 2022, when Travis Fimmel was announced, fans immediately assumed that HE would be Vorian.

This is because in the book Sisterhood of Dune, the main conflict is between Valya and Vorian, as it is in Dune: Prophecy between Desmond and Valya. The book is what mostly detailed on episode 4: Valya tasks her sister Tula (Olivia Williams) with seducing one of Vorian’s descendants. Even with a stalemate, many die and it is a tragedy. We know that there is one boy left. He will be important too.

Valya’s hatred for Vorian is older than that. Remembering that he was the son of a human cymek called Ominus, Vorian Atreides is an extremely complex character and, most importantly, vital to the plot. This is because he turned against his family and began to oppose the thinking machines, helping to defeat them in the Battle of Corrin, the same one that destroyed the reputation of the Harkonnens.

In the book Sisterhood of Dune, as in the series, Vorian is ‘missing’ because he has been living under a false name for several years while humanity rebuilds itself. Not even his heirs know how to locate him. This is the detail that reinforces the impression that in episode 6 Desmond will reveleaded as Vorian.

The importance of Travis Fimmel

As the articles said before the series aired, “Without Vorian, the whole thing falls apart. He ties everything together. He makes this a story. If he is not included in the cast of the series, then either they are creating a completely different plot — which may or may not be the case — or we are forgetting something.”

When Travis was announced, everyone immediately assumed that he could only enter as a protagonist, as the posters prove. And that leader is Vorian Atreides.

The hints that Desmond is Vorian

The description of Desmond Hart says that he is “a charismatic soldier with an enigmatic past who seeks to earn the Emperor’s trust”, the briefest description of all.

In interviews, the actor has already warned that Desmond wants revenge and that, to achieve his goal, he sees no moral or physical limits.

“He’s looking for someone really important to him, he has a personal grudge against that person,” Travis explained in an interview. “A lot of things that happened to him when he was a child that he really seeks answers for. Obviously, a lot of people go to battle sometimes when they’re fighting their own demons,” he added.

Then there’s the question: what would the sisters have done to him as a child? The answer, accidentally, might be on the actor’s social network. The week of the release of the series, he posted a short video in which, now, we see that there are SPOILERS!

Mother Superior Raquella ‘knows’ who Desmond is…

That’s right, in Travis’ video we see Desmond Hart in the middle of a Bene Gesserit council, presided over by the spirit of Mother Superior Raquella Berto-Anirul (Cathy Tyson) and other sisters. How did he end up there? It’s not a flashback because he’s wearing the new uniform. And yes, Raquella is dead, but there is a way to get in touch with her, through Lila (Chloe Lea).

Therefore, the prophecy in the title is indeed about him, which is why Raquella said about Tiran-Arafel as the “tyrannical force” that the Bene Gesserit will have to face. Valya has already correctly associated Desmond with this key person for an upcoming reckoning and to understand who this man is, why he is immune to the power of the Voice, so she will use the DNA database that is secretly manipulated by the sisters to find out his idendity.

Therefore, seeing that Desmond will be facing a ghostly Raquella is really surprising.

Having said all that, let’s remember that we’ve also seen Valya sitting on a throne similar to the one in the video. In Travis’ images, the figure looks more like a skull than a human, so I’m betting on Raquella instead of Valya.
