2024 Season: Classical Ballet Success in Rio de Janeiro

In 2024, the Theatro Municipal of Rio de Janeiro experienced a vibrant season, marking a triumphant return to the great classics and artistic experimentation. The year was particularly notable for ballet, with productions that attracted large audiences and rekindled interest in the performing arts after the challenges of the pandemic.

The Nutcracker season made history. The success of the sale of 4,500 tickets, which sold out in just seven minutes and a few seconds, led the Theatro Municipal to try something new. They will set up a large screen in an outdoor area in the city center to bring the dance to those who still want to see the show.

The big screen will be on Avenida Treze de Maio between the 19th and 21st for a free live broadcast. However, it will be available only to those who collect individual tickets (one for each CPF), which will be released one hour in advance. There is only room for 300 spectators.

The year began with the premiere of Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake, with the Symphony Orchestra and the Municipal Ballet, under the direction of Hélio Bejani. The production, which had 11 performances, was one of the season’s biggest hits, selling out tickets quickly and standing out as a milestone of the year for the company. In May, the ballet also brought the acclaimed Giselle, which enchanted the audience and received positive reviews for its technical execution and fidelity to tradition. These productions stood out for their grandeur and the positive response from the public, demonstrating a growing demand for classical productions.

August was the month of La Fille mal Gardée, a choreography by Ricardo Alfonso that also filled the theater. The work marked a commitment to the renewal and freshness of the classical repertoire, being well received by different generations of audiences.

Finally, the season of The Nutcracker in December ends the year with a flourish. Considered one of the biggest productions of the year, the rapid sales of tickets confirm the success of the audience and the consolidation of the house as a center of excellence for classical ballet in Brazil. Furthermore, it impacts the 2025 schedule: the management said that it had planned to include two new ballets in the repertoire, but one was dropped to make room for the return of Swan Lake and, of course, The Nutcracker.

Comparing 2024 with previous years, it was clear that there was a strong increase in interest in classical ballet, something that is reflected in the demand for tickets and the number of sold-out performances. This signals a renewal in the audience attending the Theatro Municipal, with a renewed interest in major ballet productions, in addition to a return to the taste for the great visual and musical narratives that marked past seasons. The diversity of productions and the commitment to artistic quality indicate that 2024 was a year of affirmation for the Municipal Ballet, further enhancing its cultural relevance on the national scene.

This reaction from the audience, with sold-out performances at several shows, suggests that the Theatro Municipal is resuming its role as a vanguard in the Brazilian performing arts scene, marking a rebirth of major productions and consolidating the house as a cultural center of fundamental importance.
