Tom Riddle’s Story: The Origin of the Dark Lord

The reboot of the Harry Potter franchise, updating the cast and re-adapting the books for streaming, has been more than confirmed by MAX to start filming in 2025. However, no names – famous or not – have been announced by the platform, only speculation.

If you let the imagination of fans of J. K. Rowling‘s characters run wild, there are no limits to who should play who or even what spin-offs should be made. Among the favorites would be a series dedicated to Voldemort’s youth. I love this speculation.

While fans insist on Cillian Murphy playing the villain (an idea approved by Ralph Fiennes, the original Voldemort), if they are actually going to cover the wizard’s ‘unknown’ years, there is a perfect candidate and very close to home: actor Hero Fiennes Tiffin. Hero, who is Ralph’s nephew and already had a cameo as a young Tom Riddle in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, is one of the favorites to return to the role. Will he?

Who is Hero Fiennes Tiffin?

The British actor who already has his own audience among millennials is still called “Joseph Fiennes‘ nephew” “Ralph Fiennes‘ nephew” or “director Martha Fiennes‘ son.” Ironically, it was because of him and his brothers that Ralph accepted the role, back in the 2000s.

According to the actor, he didn’t know the books and wasn’t interested in “children’s content,” but when he told Martha at home about the invitation, she insisted that he reconsider precisely because her children were passionate about Harry Potter. The rest is history.

And it was as Tom Riddle (Voldemort’s real name) that Hero made his debut in the franchise, at just 12 years old. Today, Hero is already recognized as an actor, model, and producer, and is best known for his role as Hardin Scott in the After Film series, based on the novels by Anna Todd.

If, in fact, Hero returns to his childhood role, it will be extremely interesting. The series would be part of the expansion of the Wizarding World and would maintain the focus on Tom Riddle’s youth before he became the Dark Lord.

Remembering Tom Riddle

Lord Voldemort, born as Tom Marvolo Riddle, is the main antagonist of the Harry Potter series. He was born on December 31, 1926, Tom was the son of Tom Riddle Sr., a Muggle (not a wizard), and Merope Gaunt, a witch descended from Salazar Slytherin. After being abandoned by his father and losing his mother shortly after birth, he grew up in an orphanage. At the age of 11, he was invited to enter Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, where he was sorted into Slytherin house.

During his time at Hogwarts, Riddle demonstrated great talent and charisma, but also a growing obsession with power and immortality. He discovered his ancestry and began using the anagram “I am Lord Voldemort” as his new name, rejecting his Muggle heritage. After school, he delved deeper into the Dark Arts, creating several Horcruxes to achieve immortality. His goal was to purify the wizarding world, eliminating those who were not of “pure blood”. He was defeated by Harry Potter when he tried to kill him as a baby, due to a protective sacrifice by his mother, Lily Potter. Years later, he regained his power but was definitively defeated by Harry in the Battle of Hogwarts.

What could a series reveal?

The story could address Tom Riddle’s childhood in the orphanage, where he already demonstrated traits of cruelty and magical control. If so, it cannot be done with just Hero in the role because he is already older for that part of the story.

The other part of his childhood would be his discovery of Hogwarts and his entrance into Slytherin, where he began to create a network of allies and explore the Dark Arts. We will probably see how he discovered his lineage as the heir of Salazar Slytherin, as well as the creation of the Horcruxes and the first steps in the search for immortality, which could be central moments in the plot.

The series could delve deeper into the dynamics of magical society before Voldemort became a full-fledged villain, showing how he manipulated people and systems to achieve his goals. Above all, it would bring another perspective on the wizard and an opportunity to understand his motivations and his mind, including his aversion to his Muggle father and his mother’s abandonment.

Current status:

The last film hit theaters in 2011, although the Wizarding Universe is kept alive with the Fantastic Beasts films and other spin-offs. The films have grossed over seven billion dollars (at the box office alone) and are therefore one of the most profitable brands ever created. A magic for which no one wants an antidote, just more!
