For over eight decades, the awards season in Hollywood started in January, with the Golden Globes. It will be no different in 2025: the first Sunday of the year, January 5, will have the first Red Carpet “parade” of the year, defining favorite looks and awards that will be repeated every week until March, when the Oscars occur.

Well, 82 years ago, the Golden Globe Awards were created by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), a response 16 years after the creation of the Oscars, which are the oldest awards in American cinema, created by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 1927, with the first ceremony taking place in 1929. So much tradition makes the Golden Globes still a reference for the Oscars, although it has never been (it does not have the same voters) officially.

With highs and ultra-low lows, the Golden Globes are one of the most prestigious awards in the entertainment industry, annually recognizing the best productions and performances in film and television in categories that separate Drama from Comedy, creating a greater number of award winners. Initially, the Golden Globes followed the example of the Oscars and awarded only film categories, but it incorporated television awards in 1955, making it the first ‘hybrid’ (today all the others follow suit).

Many things make the awards ceremony different from others, something that has also been copied outside the Oscars: it is a dinner where celebrities are served alcoholic beverages, which has led to some hilarious moments over the decades because there is less formality in the speeches. Scandals and Controversies

Despite its prestige, the Golden Globes has faced several controversies and criticisms. One of the most famous was in 1982, when Pia Zadora was recognized as “New Star of the Year”, but raised suspicions of bribery since the actress’s millionaire husband had allegedly influenced voters with gifts and trips.

Another “curious” moment was in 2011 when Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie were nominated for The Tourist and the film was massacred by critics, but this also happened in 2020 with Emily in Paris, which was nominated for Best Comedy Series in its debut season.

But the most famous moment was in 2010 when Ricky Gervais debuted as a presenter and made sharp jokes and direct criticisms of the ceremony’s guests, including Hollywood stars, which generated both laughter and discomfort. It divided opinions, but became one of the most memorable moments in the history of the event, so much so that it returned in 2012 and 2016.

In 2021, an investigation revealed the absence of black members in the HFPA and allegations of unethical practices, such as accepting gifts in exchange for votes. These revelations led to a boycott by studios and artists, resulting in the cancellation of the televised broadcast of the ceremony in 2022. Since then, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) has implemented significant reforms to increase the representation of the voting body. In 2023, it recruited 128 new voters, increasing the total to 310 individuals, including representatives from 76 countries, international journalists, and 95 members of the HFPA itself. These changes aim to reflect a more inclusive and ethical representation of the entertainment industry, ensuring integrity and diversity in the choices of award winners.

In 2024 there was an awkward situation when apparently no major comedian agreed to be the host, with the late confirmation that Jo Koy – a name without international recognition – was announced. She is known for her sharp and irreverent humor, having achieved notoriety in the comedy scene for her frank approach to topics such as sexuality, relationships, and personal issues, often exploring these topics with a self-aware and taboo-free tone.

The “favorites” of the night include the film Emilia Pérez, which leads the nominations with 10 nominations, including Best Comedy or Musical Film and Best Actress for Karla Sofía Gascón.
