Harry and Meghan: The Challenge of Creating a New Narrative Outside the Royal Family

As published on Amaury Jr. Blog/UOL

At the beginning of 2024, I decided to take a break from discussing the British Royal Family, given the intense polarization and verbal violence surrounding the topic. Ever since Meghan Markle “dared” to break with the life that was being designed for her — as a supporting character in an already established narrative and a constant target of the press — the royal behind-the-scenes has reached an unpredictable and exhausting tone. This story has countless layers, but understanding it requires considerable psychological effort.

Few who give their opinions on Meghan and Harry take the time to listen to them directly, which hinders communication and fuels one-sided versions. Still, it is impossible to ignore the contradiction that emerges in their attitudes. Although they are committed to important causes, there is a streak of inconsistency that makes them easy targets for criticism. Without the support of the palace structure, the couple is building their own narrative, and, contrary to what many predicted, they have been successful in doing so.

It is undeniable that Harry and Meghan have opened important dialogues about mental health, racism, and the impact of traditional structures. The interview with Oprah, for example, generated a wave of global reflection, raising important issues for debate. Meghan has also invested in initiatives focused on women and entrepreneurship, while Harry works on projects that prioritize mental health and the well-being of veterans. These actions show a genuine commitment to social issues, even if they are not always received unanimously.

I do, however, have my reservations about Harry’s decision to expose his family publicly and his desire to establish himself as a leader on the international stage. Experience shows that, in times of conflict, restraint can be more powerful than direct confrontation. However, Harry’s position is clear: he believes that his family not only approved but also planted the damaging stories published about him and Meghan. His statements range from accusations of jealousy, envy, or pure malice. Regardless of the reasons, his intention is to unmask what he considers to be a toxic and manipulated system.

From a psychological point of view, his accusations reflect both his personal wounds and the larger dynamics of the monarchy. By declaring that his past public image was a sham and that behind the scenes there were plenty of humiliations, Harry makes us question the authenticity of the persona he now projects. There is a lack of consistency in some narratives, which makes it easier to criticize and question his stance.

Despite this, it is undeniable that Harry and Meghan have found a space to consolidate themselves. He has shown himself to be more confident as a public figure, although he still displays gestures and expressions that reveal insecurity or irritation in interviews. His speeches have evolved, with less reliance on topics such as his mother, Diana, or his time in the army — marks that for a long time defined his identity.

Harry’s recent interview with The New York Times reinforced the tension by addressing rumors of divorce, which he denied, and ongoing legal issues, which he avoided detailing. The prince appeared defensive, suspicious, and visibly frustrated. However, there are signs that the couple is in a transitional phase. Meghan has focused on business ventures, while Harry has taken philanthropy more seriously. This division of interests suggests a less turbulent path forward.

Ultimately, Harry and Meghan are redefining their lives in the spotlight. Despite setbacks and criticism, they continue to build their own narrative that sets them apart — for better or worse.
