Michael Hirst‘s brief attempt to explore the history of the Old West proved to be short-lived. After three seasons of Billy the Kid, the showrunner of Vikings announced his new project: Bloodaxe.

The series marks the continuation of Hirst’s partnership with MGM, which was bought by Amazon Prime Video, and the showrunner’s return to the Norse universe. That’s right, after six seasons and almost 100 episodes on History with Vikings, in addition to producing three seasons of Vikings: Valhalla on Netflix, the series marks Hirst’s return to his most familiar territory. This time, he will tell the true story of the famous Viking warrior Erik Bloodaxe and his wife, Gunnhild, Mother of Kings.

“I am blessed and deeply excited that Amazon has given me the opportunity to return to the fantastical world of the Norse sagas and the men, women and gods of the Viking world that have come to mean so much to me,” said Michael Hirst, who will co-write with his son, actor Horatio Hirst. “Horatio and I intend to open your eyes to incredible new characters and incredible stories, all of which are true and many of which have changed the course of history,” he continued.
The story of Erik and Gunnhild is set in Norway, where the struggle for the throne is tearing the country apart with betrayals, alliances, and bloody battles, including kings from other Scandinavian countries and even King Eadred of England, who has come into conflict with Erik for control of Northumbria. As Deadline says, it’s the perfect setting for a new Viking saga that fans have always wanted.

There’s no casting announcement yet. It’s worth remembering that Vikings made Travis Fimmell an international star. Of course, we’ll be watching.
