What’s New in Season 3 of House of the Dragon

At this point, whether you like what’s coming depends on whether you’re on the Black team (loyal to the books) or the Green team (appreciates the series) because Ryan Condall will clearly continue to “take liberties” with House of the Dragon. From meeting Emma D’Arcy‘s demand, who wants Rhaenyra with “a sword and on the battlefield,” to the disappearance of characters, we’ll see something slightly different from the book, and only those with an open heart will be able to appreciate it.

As the main cast is campaigning for Emmy Award nominations, they all got together for a panel for fans before starting to film the third and penultimate season of the series. What did they reveal? Apparently, not much.

Filming begins at the end of March, and the scripts are still being finalized. For Condall, now that the main characters have real references – the voices, personalities, and characteristics of the actors – the work has become “easier” and “more interesting” for him “because you know everyone very well” and “you are writing for people you know”.

After exposing herself by declaring that she “demanded” that Rhaenyra be a warrior, the impossible happened. “I got what I wanted, guys,” the actress said, leaving Condall so tense that he cut her off, acknowledging that “we’re on very, very shaky ground here.”

I froze, but I’ll have to change my mind. For example, the hateful Aegon II became someone else in the great performance by Tom Glynn-Carney, and he’s also different from Fire and Blood without spoiling anything (except for making him at least a little human).

At the panel, they didn’t confirm which new characters will be joining this stage of the series. Condall only said that 85% are already the ones we’ve seen, but we’ll have some like Ormund Hightower, played by James Norton, and the character of actor Aurelio Lucas hasn’t been revealed yet.”

Another piece of news that everyone is warning about is that the season opener will already be bloody and grand to get a foot in the door. Of the many iconic moments of the conflict, four are in this season. We’ll start theorizing “which ones” right away, with two already being obvious (the battle of Gullet, which should open the new stage, and Rhaenyra taking King’s Landing).

But if Rhaenyra as a warrior gives us chills, it could get worse. “What excites me most from a dramatic perspective is that we get to have some fun this season, and it’s a concept episode, which means it’s not in the traditional vernacular of what we define as the structure of a House of the Dragon episode. It’s very character-driven, and I think it’s really great, and I’m really excited to see it rendered,” the showrunner warned.

On the other hand, having the main character of the conflict taking more risks isn’t exactly a “bad” prospect, right? As they said in the panel, the consequences of the more intimate scenes, such as those of Alicent and Rhaenyra trying to reach an agreement (radically different from the book), have more consequences for the battles and the lives of the soldiers than we can imagine. Season 2 ended with Queen Rhaenyra preparing an army of dragon riders to attack King’s Landing, but Alicent is already in crisis and questioning the whole fight. What they don’t know is that Aegon II has already escaped their reach…

What else will come out of the source material? If I’m nervous, imagine George R. R. Martin!
