The Buccaneers: What to Expect from the Second Season

The first official images of the second season of The Buccaneers reveal “nothing” about how the story will continue, not even what Leighton Meester’s mysterious role in the series is. Starting June 18, we will have one episode per week, following the adventures of wealthy American women in a pretentious English Court.

It can be summed up like this because although Edith Wharton’s unfinished book was far from simplifying the story along similar lines, Apple decided it would have a Bridgerton to call its own and went to a well-known book as a basis to tell a story completely different from the one imagined by the award-winning writer.

The anachronism used in the most wrong way possible seems to be the goal of The Buccaneers, one of the biggest and most expensive mistakes of a period series in recent years, without a charismatic cast or innovative proposal. I’m a hate watcher, of course I’ll follow.

In the first season we saw the rich American heiresses looking for noble husbands in England, navigating a new reality while dealing with romance, lust, jealousy, births and deaths. Out of context, also while struggling “to be heard” and find their place in a society that they practically rule.

The main characters are Nan (now the Duchess of Tintagel); Conchita (Lady Brightlingsea), involved in a loving marriage, but with a husband secretly involved with another woman; and Nan’s half-sister, Jinny, who ended up being wanted for the kidnapping of her unborn child after suffering abuse from her husband.

The shy Nan liked Theo, but loved his friend, Guy. However, in order to have the power to help Jinny, she accepts the union to gain the title of Duchess of Tintagel, immediately assuming the position of “the most influential woman in the country”. We’ll see her face challenges in her marriage to Theo and her relationship with Guy.

Conchita, now Lady Brightlingsea, is a heroine for a wave of young American heiresses landing in England, but she also faces her own set of challenges in a racist society and a relationship full of secrets.

Helped by Guy, at Nan’s request, Jinny is on the run, but she’s all over the front pages and a “criminal” who adds another layer of drama to the season.

In addition to Leighton Meester, who everyone suspects will play Nan’s mysterious biological mother, the cast has gained the participation of Greg Wise, who curiously starred previously in the BBC adaptation of the book in 1995, precisely as the hero Guy Thwaite. His role has not yet been disclosed.

I can’t get excited and the teaser confirms my fears of superficiality and even irresponsibility in adapting the novel for the screen. What can you do? They wanted a famous title… but only Brigderton got it right in terms of boldness. The rest really looks like a copy…
