Honey: The Killing Eve Prequel Focused on Carolyn Mertens

It’s not a popular opinion given the huge success of the story of the psychopath Villanelle and the MI6 agent Eve, the protagonists of Killing Eve, but the one who interested me the most during the series was always Carolyn Mertens. Cold, enigmatic, but emotional to a more dangerous degree than the spontaneous Eve or the socialist Villanelle. Unsurprisingly, it was her final shot that ensured the tragic ending of the series, killing Villanelle as was always the mission, even after having been “spared” by her at some point. Cruel.

Of course, Fiona Shaw‘s brilliant performance brought an indispensable depth to the plot. I’ll go further: without Carolyn, the series would have no meaning because the cat-and-mouse between the protagonists ran out of steam in the second season and became irritating in the others. There’s still a lot to be said about Carolyn’s future, but even more so about her past. That’s why a prequel is already in the works to cover the years and life of the MI6 spy during the Cold War. The flashbacks in Killing Eve prove that it has the potential to be spectacular.

The news is that the spin-off will be called Honey and will follow Carolyn’s steps as a spy in the Soviet Union, including her love affairs and personal dramas. A bonus is that since it’s set in the 1980s, the soundtrack could be even better!

Many people were surprised that the series decided to explore its surprise antagonist, but I agree that it’s fascinating, a kind of Slow Horses with humor. And the news started to spread even before the end of Killing Eve.

The synopsis describes that MI6 secret agent, codenamed Marta, is surrounded by enemies and constantly under threat of her cover being blown, so she tries her best to avoid detection by Friedrich Bauman, the new head of counterintelligence at the Stasi. Carolyn, who was trained by her own father, eventually becomes the ruthless and enigmatic head of MI6’s Russia office.

With confirmation that the scripts are already in the works, Honey could become a reality in the near future. We’ll certainly keep an eye on it!
