Generation X definitely has something to deal with when it comes to “age limits”. If the previous generation reached 50 as if they were incapable of great adventures, today we see sixty-somethings like Madonna dancing and singing on stage, Brad Pitt looking amazing in any action film and, above all, Tom Cruise defying gravity and Death in every film he stars in. Add to this the franchise whose name says the mission is impossible, and we “get” unforgettable scenes of (unnecessary) risks for Art.

I don’t know if it’s to “provoke” or admit that 63 years is a bit of a limit for Ethan Hunt, Cruise’s alter ego for the last 30 years. Eight films (four of them breaking box office records) have transformed megastar Tom Cruise into one of the greatest legends ever created in Hollywood. Yes, he is literally a living legend, or at least for now. Because what the actor does is terrifying.
When he bought the rights to the TV series to take it to the big screen, Tom Cruise thought of just one film, but its success led him to a sequel, and the success of that one, was a trilogy. At this point, as one of the most successful producers of today, the franchise was born. And Ethan Hunt became a bit like the “Michael Corleone of Espionage”: the more he tries to leave, the more they pull him back. Since 2011, with the third film, Ethan has been announcing his retirement. He got married and lived a quiet civilian life for a few years, but since he was dragged back, he got divorced and started traveling the world solo, with a small and loyal team. And we arrive in 2025 once again with the suggestion that this will be Hunt’s “last” adventure. We’re already skeptical.

The final trailer for Mission: Impossible – Final Reckoning doesn’t reveal anything enlightening about the pending issues (and there are many), but it does have a file that provides personal information: Ethan graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in Engineering and International Relations; he is the only child of Margareth and Nathan Hunt; he is single; he is 1.70m tall; he speaks German, French and English and was born on August 18, 1964 in Madison, Wisconsin. He served in the army and was recruited by Colonel Briggs to join the M.I.F., being an accurate shooter and practicing martial arts. They should have included the suicide assessment, but that’s a personal opinion.
Hunt and company’s current mission is to track down a terrifying new weapon that threatens all of humanity if it falls into the wrong hands (what’s new for him in that?). The problem is that he runs into a mysterious and all-powerful old enemy, putting the choice between the mission and friendship in check. In the final part, the story is still the same, with strong implications that Ethan will “do it for the team”, in other words, gives his life for the mission.

The trailer is full of references to all the films in the franchise, tying them all together in some way. Incredibly visual, but hardly exciting. Especially because, in 2011, Jeremy Renner was supposed to be the heir to the role, but he came and went and Tom Cruise remains the absolute star. It’s been 14 years since then, it’s almost comical to think that the star was only 49 when he started talking about retirement. I can’t believe that has changed yet.
Well, here’s the trailer. The movie is released in theaters on May 23, and we’ll be talking a lot about Tom Cruise from now until then.
